1901 Census - Wheeler- Suffolk
« on: Thursday 16 December 04 21:20 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

Now you would think it would be easy, 1901 census being online etc but I need assistance.
My Great Grandfather Alfred Wood Wheeler and his siblings have all gone missing from the 1901 census and i know they weren't dead and pretty sure they were not abroad.
Alfred Wood Wheeler b 1870
James Wheeler b 1880
George Richard Wheeler b 1876

All born East Bergholt or Holton St Mary.

When I search by name online none come up and a trawl through whole of East Bergholt records for 1901 census would be expensive.
Any ideas.

Look forward to some words of wisdom

The Wheeler's all seem to stem from East Bergholt or Stratford St Mary, Suffolk area(now as far as I'm aware it's called Essex)

Here are some to work on!

1901
Willsons yard, Saxilby cum Ingleby, Wetton, Lindsey, Lincolnshire
GEORGE R WHEELER   25 life assurance agent,   east bergholt, suffolk
Jane                   "        28
__________________________
1891
No 3 Main Road Terrace, Dovercourt, Harwich
Alfred Wheeler       lodger  21      East Bergholt
________________________________
Leyton, Essex
ALL Wheeler's appear to be connected ? the Heads being born in East Bergholt

you will find the Wheeler's in number including the man himself...
census 1891 No 1 Maria Cottages, Leyton
WILLIAM aged 76 and a widower who was born in East Bergholt is living with his son WILLIAM aged 42, born East Bergholt and his wife Emily who was born in Ipswich, plus ALL their children. WILLIAM (senior) appears to be the man who took the name to Leyton?

1891 census
The Vines, Leyton
Another William aged 44 b. east bergholt with wife Ellen born stoke gregory and children
________________
1901 census
32 Church Row
same family as above...William & Ellen +

John W Wheeler     44    beerhouse keeper       east bergholt

Hi all

Many thanks for your info.

Bryant, nice to hear from you again and thanks with Iria for the info on George Richard. The shepherds son had certainly gone up? in the world.

Also thanks for the Alfred Wood info from 1891. i reckon that he was at sea in 1901 as he was a ships donkey man at one stage.

other info will be helpful but no link at moment to my Wheelers.

Now where has James gone ?

Have a great Christmas and New Year

Terry

And ships donkey men looked after donkeys!
to south africa 1899-1901 and mainly to the likes of Palestine and places in north africa in 1914-1918 as thousands of donkeys were used by the troops!

have a good christmas

Bryant,

You are a gem.

I always though a Ships Donkeyman was an engineer job on ship until your advice. It all ties up now. Apparently my Great Grandfather was one of the best drovers in East Anglia all through his life and I wondered why he went to sea. Now i know why.

Cheers

Hi Terry

I have been communicating with a lady on another forum and she has Wheeler in her family tree.

Hers though are from Lydiard Millicent, Wiltshire.

If you think they may be a connection I could put you in  touch.

Hello Wendy,

Many thanks and I will keep in mind.

however my initial feelings are that they are very unlikely to be connected within the last couple of hundred years.
