I am looking for details of a marriage between Thomas Catling (bc1811 somewhere in Hunts) and someone else. I am trying to trace the mother of Martha Burton Catling bc1829 in St Ives district. In the 1841 census it just shows Thomas (aged 30) and Martha (aged 12) living in Upwood. Is anyone able to provide any information that may help? Thanks in advance ...
The only pre 1837 Hunts marriage of a Thomas Catlin(g) was in 1821 at Gt Staughton to Elizabeth Medlock, which doesn't look to be the right one. Definitely wrong - they were alive and kicking in Hail Weston in 1851 indexed as Cattin.
So it doesn't look as though Thomas married in Hunts
In 1851 and 1861 his imputed birth was 1804, occupation cordwainer (in 1841 he was described as shoe maker)
Martha married Frederick Clark in 1847 and was living in Upwood in 1851 age 23 birthplace St Ives, the same as Thomas.
There was a burial of an Elizabeth Catlin age 23 on 22 March 1829 in St Ives, the only Catlin burial in St Ives since 1818. Might be Martha's mother?

Thanks for the information, David, I appreciate you going to the trouble of looking beyond marriages. Frederick Clark(e) was my 2xgreat grandfather.
Given the location of St Ives and Upwood, I don't know where else to look - Cambs or Northants would seem closest but quite a trudge away (even for someone who makes his own shoes). If I go with the Thomas in the 1851 and 1861 censuses being the same person then he seems to have gained a new family since 1841. I can't see any marriages on Ancestry though to go with that - can anyone find a marriage to a Sarah between 1841 and 1851? In the meantime, I will put a query on the Northants and Cambs lists ...
Sarah's birthplace is given in 3 censuses as Olford or Holford Kent. There's no indication that Thomas moved to Kent at any time, but it's a long shot if all else fails
