Pescod/Gosden marriage
« on: Thursday 30 August 07 09:27 BST (UK) »

I have run up against a brick wall. Can anyone help, please.

My ancestor,William Pescod ,born about1660 obtained a licence to marry Jane Gosden of Lodsworth at Chichester in 1689. No details of the marriage actually taking place can be found . It is possible it took place in Hampshire as many of the family came from the Odiham area.

I am trying to obtain evidence of the marriage and also details of the christening of William and names of his parents. Can anyone help, please.

Hi
I may be stating the obvious but although the licence was obtained in Chichester it is likely the marriage took place in the bride's village of Lodsworth.
I see there are generations of William Pescods baptised in Lodsworth.

There is a William bap. at Littlehampton 10/10/1659 but you've probably checked him out.

Mimmi,

I'm afraid that none of the parishes in Hampshire come under the jurisdiction of the Archdeacon of Chichester.  If he or his surrogate issued a licence then the marriage is supposed to take place within his jurisdiction, which is all of West Sussex, except All Saints Chichester, Durrington, East Lavant, Heene, Horsham, Pagham, Slindon, South Bersted, Tangmere and West Tarring, New Fishbourne and Rumboldswyke.

Little Nell and Matriarch,

Thank you for your comments. I'll keep looking and hopefully something will turn up somewhere
