Church Records - Christening
« on: Friday 31 August 07 10:52 BST (UK) »

Can anyone tell me if Church Records for a christening in 1836 would show mothers maiden name.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the answer may be ... sometimes yes, sometimes no. I've found that the further back you go, the less likely it is that the mother's name is included.

Can you tell us the names you're searching?

Ruskie

My g g g grandparents John Harper and Elizabeth had 3 children that were christened at All Saints Church, Claverley. on the following dates.

George     -  June 1828
Henry           -  Apr   1830
Elizabeth       - Feb   1836

I have been unable to find a marriage between their parents so I am trying to find Elizabeths maiden name.

Regards

Fay

Hi Fay,
Do you have the family in any or all census?

Ruskie

1841

John and his wife Elizabeth, living with their 2 children, Henry and Elizabeth - Claverley.

George their eldest son is not with his family but is shown still in Claverley male labourer.

1851

Elizabeth - widow (John passed away 1850) - Claverley.
Henry    - son
Elizabeth - daughter

1861

Elizabeth - widow Claverley - Digbeth Lane.
Children have moved away.
I have traced son Henry through to 1901 and he died 1903.

1871

Elizabeth - widow still living in Claverley.

Elizabeth passed away 1878

Regards

Fay

Hi Fay,
Thanks for those - I was really wondering if you wanted me to look for them in the census for you. Sometimes there are children born after 1837, or in-laws with the family - little clues which may help. Not in this case unfortunately.

Yes, I just had a look and found the family in 1841. Wondering if the couple had other children before George?

I don't have any Shropshire PR's - I hope someone who does will be able to assist, but I'll poke around and see if I can dig anything up.

Thanks Ruskie

I haven't been able to find any other children other than the ones I mentioned.

I may contact Shropshire Archives to see if they can check the Church Records for maybe one of the children.

Regards

Fay
