Brading resident to 1849
« on: Friday 31 August 07 16:41 BST (UK) »

Hello,

Looking for help from a Brading history expert please!

This is another attempt to track where my ggggfr lived in Brading.
Name: Capt Joseph William Bazalgette, RN.
Born: 1783 London, Died: 1849 Ryde

He is buried in  Brading churchyard and must have lived at or close to Brading - I guess in a fairly substantial house.
He died at Lind St, Ryde, but I think this was probably a hospital or nursing home.

He is in the 1841 census as living in Hamilton Terrace, Maida Vale.  He sold this house in 1847, so he may have bought a house in Brading then or earlier.  So he may only have lived there for two years before his death.  His wife moved to Tonbridge some time after he died - presumably she had family there.

Any help gratefully received!

Thanks,
Charles

There is a will for Joseph William BAZALGETTE of Saint Marylebone , Middlesex on the National Archives site.  If you haven't already got a copy it might give the name of his IOW house.

Hi Bearkat,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm afraid it doesn't.
I have all the genealogical info on the man.
In my experience wills are are almost always vague about the names of properties - unfortunately.

Thanks,
Charles

I've found his death notice in The Times but it just says he died in Ryde. Sad

Yes, tantalizing, isn't it.  I have his death certificate too.  Lind Street is a fairly major street and I think it is very unlikely he lived there, especially since he was buried at Brading. Being an old sea dog, he would have wanted a sea view, which of course he still enjoys  Smiley

Have you tried the IOW records Office?

Yes, drew a blank at the IOW and Hampshire record offices.
What sort of historical directory do you mean?

I've been looking at the Historical Directories site but there doesn't seem to be anything of the right time period for the IOW.  All well as listing traders they can mention notable people.

Have you found an obituary in a newspaper?  I can't see one in The Times but there might be one in an IOW newpaper.

I did contact the IOW Family History Society a while ago and remember asking about local papers but there was apparently nothing found

Hospitals and nursing homes were not common in the 1840s.  Florence Nightingale had not yet been on crusade in the Crimea.  I do not think it would have been a hospital.

Lind Street housed St James Chapel, several solicitors, a couple of lodging houses, a day school, a dressmaker, some gentry, a builder, the offices of a couple of insurance agents as well as the Town Hall.

May I suggest that you get in touch with the Brading Town Trust, Mr J R Lee, 42 High Street, Brading, PO36 0DJ.  They are supposed to have a website but I get an error and can't find a new link at the moment.

Hi Nell,

Many thanks for this information.  I suppose my ggggfr could have been visiting someone in Lind Street and keeled over.  Not sure in that case whether his death would then have been registered as having happened there.  I will have another look at the certificate.  I can't see that he would have been buried at Brading if he had lived in Ryde but I suppose it's possible.

I sent an email to Brading Town Hall asking to be put in touch with the Heritage Centre, which I understand comes under the Trust.

Let's hope something good will come up.

Thanks again for all replies so far.
