Ley - Benjamin * completed*
« on: Saturday 01 September 07 00:23 BST (UK) »

Hi,

I am looking for the baptism of Benjamin Ley (Lay or Laye).

He was married to Hannah and had eleven children whilst living in Didcot.  The first child was baptised in 1781 and the last in 1804.

I cannot find his baptism so far - has anyone else come across it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Peony

Hi Peony,
Found this in the 1841 census hope it helps
                   Benjamin Lay b 1756 Age 85
                   Hannah Lay age 80
                   Hannah Lay age 15
                   Richard Lay age 50
It gves Benjamin was born in Dudcott but I think it’s a spelling mistake and is supposed to be Didcot.

I've just looked through the Didcot baptism PRs (1562-1939) and, unfortunately, there's only one Benjamin Lay -

baptised 4 Nov 1781 son of Benjamin & Hannah

so obviously the child of your couple. Infact, he's the earliest Lay baptised in Didcot - I also checked for spelling variations.

Looks like he'd lived there so long, he thought he was born there!

Hi,

Thanks for this.   I have tried most of the parishes around Didcot.  His son actually married in East Lockinge and then moved to Hambleden.  I had a post on the Oxfordshire board (that I will chase up next time I am at the family record centre),  a Benjamin Lay died in Kidlington in 1796.

Thanks

Hi Corndolly,

So far my Lays have not got this far - but you never know.  This Benjamin Lay is the furthest I have got back.

I can confirm that their are Lay details in Yarnton, Wolvercote, Kidlingdon, Wallingford, Islip, Hanney, Longworth, Kingston Bagpuize, Steventon, Wantage.    But not the Lay that  I want Cry

Never mind - one day I will find him.

I have Lay ancestors also in the area of Wootton, Stonesfield & possibly Combe (pre 1700). It seems they're all over Oxfordshire!!

Hi,

As a final update, I contacted a lady through ancestry who pointed me in the right direction.

My Benjamin Lay was baptised in Fyfield, Berkshire (or Oxfordshire now)

Thanks
