Timms 1841 census or 1851 *completed *
« on: Saturday 01 September 07 15:17 BST (UK) »

Hi,
I wonder if someone may be able to do a census look up please for an Amos Timms born 1831 approx in Farthinghoe Northampton.
I am struggling with the parents names so this may hopefully clear this up.
The parents are either William and Elizabeth or Thomas and Rebecca.
After finding a christening for Amos on Family search his parents are stated as William and Elizabeth. On a later census his mothers name is Rebecca and his father has deceased so rather confusing unless it be 2 totally different families.
Thanks for any help

Not sure where the parents are in 1851, they are still alive in 1861 census  RG9 936 51 22.

Hi Lou

This will probably add to your confusion. I found an Amos Timms on the 1851 in Northampton with  brothers, so not sure if he is yours, this Amos was born abt 1832, but in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire. Others in the census include Elizabeth Baker aged 23, Matilda Baker aged 2, George Timms aged 21, John Timms aged 10 and Thomas Timms aged 24. Are any of these names familar to you?

I couldn't find Amos in the 1841 census but I did find a Thomas and Rebecca Timms in All Saints, Northamptonshire with their sons Thomas, John and George- same names as the above brothers to Amos in the 1851 census, as well as daughters Elizabeth and Anna, but no mention of an Amos. The ages of the boys in the 1841 census vary slightly to the ages given in the 1851 census.

Regards

lil

sorry guys, didnt have the heart to delete it, it took me ages to find and type out lol

Thanks Lil,
It certainly is confusing. There seems to be so many Timms in the area as well which doesn't help. I know earlier records show the name as Tim and Tims as well so trying to find the correct one is a nightmare.
Thank you all for your help

Thanks Kerry,
Am i right in saying that on the 1851 census Elizabeth is Thomas's partner and Matilda is their daughter?

Lou

That is what I presume.  She is there again in 1871 with Rebecca (mother of Thomas and Amos) and Thomas.  Perhaps they never married.

90 Scalewell Street, Northampton
Rebecca Timms, Head, 65, Lacemaker born Northampton
Thomas Timms, son, 42, Bootmaker, born Hardingstone
Elizabeth Baker, lodger, 41, shoecloser? born Northampton
Thomas Baker, son, 15, shoefinisher, born Northampton
Mary Ann Baker, daughter, 10, born Northampton

A son named after Thomas and one named after an Uncle??

Blimey it gets worse  Shocked
Amos Timms married Jane James in 1852 in Northampton would this be why we can't find him as we are still looking for him with his family?
Also is it not odd that in the 1871 census Elizabeth is down as a lodger rather than a partner or is that how they used to put people as if they weren't married?

Found amos in 1861 if that's any help!

RG9 949 128 13
Living in Pitsford
John James, 60, Ag Lab born Pitsford
Charles James, son, 23, Ag Lab, born Pitsford
Amos Timms, 24, visitor, Sodawater maker, born Hardingstone
Jane Timms, 30, born Pitsford
Rosa Timms, 2, born Northampton
Elizabeth Timms, 10 months born Northampton

Funny I always thought a sodawater maker was a cylinder with a handle that makes a funny noise when you push it down.   Grin Grin

As to the Elizabeth Baker question the 1881 census RG11 1547 13 20

90 Scalewell Street, Northampton has
Rebecca Timms, widow, 77 born Northampton
Thomas Timms, son, 55, shoefinisher born Northampton
George Timms, son, 50, shoemaker, born Northampton
Thomas Timms, grandson, 22, shoefinisher, born Northamton
Mary Timms, granddaughter, 12, shoe machinist, born Northampton
Amos Timms, grandson, 15, shoe finisher, born Northampton
Mary Timmss, boarder, 63 chairwoman

Could the 3 children be the Baker children of the 1871?
