« on: Saturday 29 September 07 17:40 BST (UK) »

Can anyone tell me how i would go about finding a relative whom emigrated in the late 60's - 70's? All i have to go on is a name and area of birth!

Many thanks

If you think they are still alive, you could try www.canada411.ca

Do you have any idea what part of Canada they may have come to?

Hi Penninah,

Just wondering if you know where he left from and the name of the passenger ship/airline he took  - from that you might be able to tell which "port" of entry in Canada this fellow used. Maybe a family member or friend know where he departed from and which mode of transportation he used. Did he come to Canada alone? Where he went from the point of entry in Canada is a guess though unless you can get train or airline records from that location.

Similar for Immigration Canada, I'm not sure if they would give you information if he has been naturalized or gained Canadian citizenship. Do you have any other rellies in Canada that may have sponsored him or at least seen him, they might be good to contact to find out where he has been and currently is. In the 60s and early 70s there was a lot of trades people being brought over by Canadian companies due to the shortage of labourin the trades situated in some places in Canada (southern Ontario being one of them). In that case a work visa and other documents would have to be done on both sides of the political borders.

Unfortunately, the privacy act here and likely the other side has put a big crimp on finding someone that falls within its date limitations. However, there are always ways to do it if we get a bit creative Smiley

Some avenues to try anyway - Hope this helps.
