Deans Family Westruther
« on: Saturday 01 September 07 17:30 BST (UK) »

I have been told that there are MI's for 2 Deans Families in Westruther. Joseph Deans and Janet Brown and Joseph Deans and Elizabeth Lidgate.

Can anyone tell me if there is any indication that these famlies came from Skene in Aberdeenshire.

Thanks in advance

Hi Jean

In the 1851/61 Censuses there is a Joseph (b. c. 1804) and Elizabeth (b. c. 1803) with family living in Westruther. Joseph shows as born in Westruther and Elizabeth in Dunbar, Haddington (East Lothian). Cannot easily see the other Joseph with wife Janet Brown.

In the family of Joseph and Elizabeth, there is a son Joseph showing also as born in Westruther in 1831.

If the family is of interest I can post their 1851 entry.

Regards.

Hi Monica

Thanks for that info.

The other Joseph Deans and his wife Janet Brown died before 1841 so they won't be found in any census. If this is my Joseph he was born in 1768 in Skene Aberdeenshire.

Joseph born 1803 is this Joseph's son.

I am hoping that there is a reference to Skene on one of the MI's

Can you let me have the 1851 census info. Names of children may help to narrow this down.

Many thanks
Jean

Hi Jean

These are the 1841 and 51 census entries for the family:

1841:

Joseph Deans 35, agri lab.
Elisabeth Deans 35
Joseph Deans    11
Mary Deans    8
William B Deans 4
Elisabeth Deans 2

Address: Wester Spottiswoode, Westruther - Everyone apart from Elizabeth showing as born in the County

1851:

Joseph Deans    47, road surface man
Elisabeth Deans 48
Joseph Deans    20
William Deans    14
Elisabeth Deans 12
James Deans    9

Address: Whiteburn, Westruther

On IGI, these are the only entries I can see for some of the children's births/christenings:

1. AGNES DEANS Christening: 25 JUN 1826 Shotts, Lanark, Scotland
2. MARY DEANS  Christening: 22 JUL 1832 Westruther, Berwick, Scotland
3. ELIZABETH DEANS Christening: 05 FEB 1839 Westruther, Berwick, Scotland

Joseph is still alive in the 1881 census, visiting a DEANS family in Westruther. Have you tried searching for his death which should show the names of his parents (if known to the informant). This looks a possibility for his death on Scotlands People, the only one showing in Berwickshire with 10yrs +/- on his birth year:

1884   DEANS   JOSEPH    82   LAUDER   /BERWICK   748/00 0007

Regards.

Monica

Hi Monica

Thanks for that. I have Joseph in1881 with his son John at Harelaw Cottages Westruther and his death cert. His parents are shown as Joseph Deans and Janet Brown.

I just need to see if the Joseph Deans who died in the 1830's(his father) is the Joseph Deans who came from Skene.

Hoping that the MI states something to this effect. Smiley

Best wishes

The MI may be the only source for this info - fingers crossed it shows this.

From the Scotlands People OPR index, you have potentially the two generations of DEANS in Westruther. Unfortunately, only father's name is showing for the first set of children:

To father Joseph Deans:

William - 1788
Marrion - 1793
Alexander - 1795
Joseph - 1803

To Parents Joseph and Elizabeth Lidgate:

Agnes - 1826 (in Lanark)
John - 1828
Joseph - 1830
Mary - 1832
William Brown - 1838
James - 1841

Can't see a marriage date for Joseph and Elizabeth, so more difficult to see where the naming order may have started for their children.

Regards.

Hi Beckey

Thanks for the info from the MI.

The dates for the elder Jospeh tie in with the dates I have. However I still don't have the  proof that the elder Joseph was born in Aberdeenshire. I was so hoping that the headstone mentioned Skene or Aberdeenshire.

Boo Hoo.

Thanks for your help

Hi Jean
I am descended from Joseph / Janet, through their son Alexander b. 1795.

I have been informed by several people that Joseph came from Skene.  I have not verified this myself yet.

I have a photo of Joseph / Janet headstone.
