« on: Friday 17 December 04 21:40 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Does anyone have access to the Warbleton Parish Records Huh

Looking for a birth.  Eleanor Sampson

She married 1/11/1603 at St Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Warbleton to a Thomas Furminger from Brede.

Thanks

Hi,

They should be accessible on the FamilySearch site: Baptisms ~ C042841 ~ 1556 - 1812 ~ E042841.

Site seems to be down at the moment.

Would the following be a possibility?

Elner Sampson, baptised 14 Feb 1579, Lewes All Saints, father John Sampson IGI Batch No. C148091

If so

John Sampson m Mary Gladdish Peasmarsh, East Sussex 29 Oct 1573
or
John Samson m Katherine Awcock Fletching, East Sussex 28 Nov 1576

might be the possible marriages.

Nell,

Thanks, certainly a good possible for Eleanor. Have seen a few varients on the spelling including a similar with 2 LL's.

I have no idea what I was doing before when I could not find the entry, but I can find it now. Maybe my typing is getting worse.

Are your spellings of the John Sampson names correct ?, if so then the first would be a better match as it has the P.

Thanks and Happy Xmas

Hi Adrian,

The spellings are as transcribed in the index.  However, given the fact that consistent spelling was a very hit and miss affair even 100 years ago, then I'd note both marriages down and investigate further if possible.  I would also add that the variants for Awcock should include Alcock.  I've come across both in the same time period in the same area of the country.  Must be something to do with ye olde Sussex dialect. Wink

Nell

Thanks will add Alcock into the mix.

Mis spelling is something I am very  used too, especially in Sussex, with my surname. Itis quite amazing, i think the only two letters I have not seen used are Q and Z.

I will be more than happy to just confirm which marriage is the correct one as this is a minor branch. I understand the Lewes record office has a copy of the Baptism register from 1587 - 1812, so might see if I can find the birth of Ellanor and hopfully confirmation of her parents.

From what I can see the SFHG have the PR's back to 1556, which I assume is the start for Warbleton, but its on fiche, so will leave as last resort, hate reading fiche and have put my reader in the loft.

Appreciate the help
Adrian
