Mary Burt, Preston, Weymouth
« on: Sunday 02 September 07 14:16 BST (UK) »

Mary Bury wife of William Burt baptised at Preston, Weymouth 4.8.1793 as Mary Fooks. She died sometime after the 1871 census. Although there are entries for the death of Mary Burt in 1871 and two in 1873 have been unable to confirm which one relates to my ancestor. The 1871 census showed her living at Preston, Weymouth.

Hi Ray
Welcome to Roots Chat, nice bunch of people and very helpful here.

Are you just using the deaths shown on FreeBMD or the complete index?

The Sept Qtr 1871 Weymouth Mary shows aged 80 indicating birth circa 1791.
The Dec Qtr 1873 Weymouth Mary shows aged 77 indicating birth circa 1796.
The Sept Qtr 1873 Wimborne Mary Ann shows aged 74 indicating birth circa 1799.
The 1871 census entry shows a pauper aged 80 indicating birth circa 1791.

Wimborne is some miles from Weymouth and although not impossible I doubt a pauper aged 80 would have made the trip and anyway she was too young and in 1871 was with her son in law Charles Whitelock at Canford, which was adjoining Wimborne. Given the evidence provided personally I think I would stick my neck out and go for the 1871 Sept Qtr Mary, but of course that is only my opinion others may have other ideas!

Hi Spiderboy

Thanks for your reply - I would tend to agree with you but both the 1871 and 1873 records would fit if you accept the age variation.
I am certain she was buried at Preston, Wemouth and it might mean a visit to the Dorset History Centre

Have you tried this site? http://www.dorset-opc.com/Preston/Preston.htm thats the church she was likely to be buried at if living in the Preston area of Weymouth as that was the only one other than the chapel in sutton road, which has no graveyard attached.
