Hi
I have been trying to track down Harry Verdon Glasby for many years now and don't seem to be getting any further.
In 1918 he married my ancestor Edith Payne in the district of Skipton. His marriage certificate states father Charles Glasby, school master. That is the only definate evidence I have so far. In 1920 they had a son, Albert, born in the Chesterfield district.
On Freebmd I found a Charles Glasby marriage in 1884 in the Chesterfield district (born 1863 Mosboro as per 1881 census). I am guessing, therefore, he may be Harry's father.
I have been unable to find Charles or Harry V 1901.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
Best regards
Amanda

Oh, and Occupation ?

The 1884 Marriage - Charles Glasby would seem to have married Elizabeth Smedly in Chesterfield District.
In 1891 they are in Eckington, and Charles is an Iron Moulder ....

Hi
Please would you be kind enough to post the 1891 transcript. It may provide a clue or two.
Thank you

Here's my theory ....
Given the names in the 1891 I mentioned ...
1891 - RG12/2770; Folio 111; Page 6; - Eckington, Chesterfield District 'Spinkhill'
Charles Glasby 27 Head Iron Moulder Derby, Mosborough Elizabeth Glasby 25 Wife Newbold Ernest Glasby 5 son Newbold Hubert Glasby 3 son Killamarsh Arthur Glasby 1/12 Spinkhill
and this birth entry ....
Births Jun 1897 Glasby Henry Chesterfield Vol 7b Page 771
tbc ....

cont ....
In 1901, we see the older brother Ernest, with younger siblings born post 1891, including Henry (aka Harry ?) with Grandparents in NewBold. Their surname is Elizabeth's Maiden name ... ... note PoB of Henry ..
1901 - RG13/3250; Folio: 91; Page: 54 - Newbold & Dunston St Johns Road William Smedley 72 Head Retired Miner Derby, Loscoe? Grace Smedley 68 Wife Newbold Joseph Smedley 38 son do
Edith Glasby 8 Granddau Spinkhill Ernest Glasby 15 Grandson Labourer Newbold Moor Henry Glasby 3 Grandson Spinkhill
William Lume 19 Boarder
John H Titlow 16 Grandson
So I'd say this is your 'Harry' - not sure where his folks are w/o further search in 1901 and/or Death Registers.
I guess he decided to jazz up his fathers job when he got married ?
I cant see any other combination which hits his DoB and the link to an Iron Moulder ...
Have you looked for his Military records ?
His middle name may be one of his Grandmother's maiden names .... could be lurking in a baptism record somewhere ...

This could be the Mother Elizabeth - perhaps Charles left the area for work and the kids went with Grandparents whilst he was away ?

Hi
WOW
Thank you so much. The medical card is amazing. It does confirm his full name of Henry.
The 1891 census details certainly tie up with all the place names. There's a lot of information for me to work with.
Thank you so much.
Very best regards
Amanda

Just downloaded the Med card. Unfortunately, it doesn't give me any further information. It has given me a new place of reference though.
Thank you

sometimes you get lucky - so if its given you a lead thats good.
Did he just have a Silver War Badge, or any actual campaign or gallantry related medals ?
Can be hard to decipher ....
Having his Army number will help research him if you want to spend a day at Kew - or post on the Armed Forces forum here, theres a couple of researchers who may be able to help you.
Browse this first ...

Hi
As far as I can tell, the card indicates Victory and British? I don't actually know what that means but I shall look it up.
Thank you
Best regards
Amanda

see if you can find where the Parish Registers for Newbold are today - you might get lucky and find that his middle name is recorded.
I did mean to look at the earlier marriages on both sides to see if it surfaces as a maiden name ...
