George Washington WHEELER 1826
« on: Monday 03 September 07 13:12 BST (UK) »

George Washington WHEELER was baptised at Buckland, 17 Jan 1826, parents Benjamin and Mary Anne - extracted entry on IGI. Two others found, Edwin 1814 and Emma 1820.

1841 has a George WHEELER aged 15 at Buckland in the same household as Edwin WHEELER. Can't find either of them in 1851. Edwin is in Bath, Somerset in 1861. George married Selina BASSETT in 1852 and came to New Zealand a year or so later.

Selina BASSETT was at Buckland in 1851, staying with her uncle William WINTLE. There is some connection between the WHEELER and WINTLE family as William had the second name WHEELER. Also two of Selina's siblings had the name WHEELER as a second name.

Trying to find marriage of Benjamin WHEELER to Mary Anne, but without any luck. Anyone able to do a look up for this, as well as any other children.

Many thanks

Have since found Edwin and Emma in 1851 in Buckland with their widowed mother Mary Ann, indexed as WHEELES. No sign of George though.

Hi

marriage from the registers of Buckland

1813 June 16th
Benjemin Wheeler b muscian to Mary Ann Cole by license
witnessed Jane Provis & ? Halford

I am fairly sure this is the right marriage because at Georges baptism Jan 17th 1826 Benemins occupation is given as master muscian.  I could not see any siblings other than the two you already have,  it may be that Benjemin was away from home quite a bit

Many thanks Debbie.

According to some sources here he was from Essex. Not sure where that came from though. Mary Ann was according to 1851 census.

Now to find Benjamin in 1841.

I have just found  a burial for a Benjemin Wheeler 12th May 1841 in Buckland - aged 79!  it would make him quite a bit older than Mary Ann,  it would also mean he missed the census which was in June that time I believe

Thanks again. Mary Ann was 62 or 67 in 1851, so she was born 1784-1788. If Benjamin was 79 in 1841 that makes his birth about 1762.

Edwin and George WHEELER were a couple of houses away from William WINTLE in 1841, in Buckland. William WINTLE was in Buckland in 1851 and so were the WHEELERS, so George must have been there somewhere as well.

Are there any WINTLE marriages in the Buckland registers. William WINTLE married Elizabeth ?? about 1795 as William was born 1796.

Many thanks Debbie.

The William WINTLE marriage proves we have the right family as far as I can see. As well as the son William Wheeler WINTLE, they had a daughter Selina, who married Samuel BASSETT, also a Customs Excise officer. The Bassett sons were Thomas Wheeler Wintle BASSETT and William Wintle BASSETT. One daughter was Priscilla Wheeler BASSETT.

Any chance of a lookup to see if there are any baptisms for Elizabeth, Priscilla and Benjamin, to see if they are siblings.

Found Benjamin WHEELER's will on Documentsonline, June 1841, mentions his wife Mary Ann, and children Edwin, Emma and George Washington.
