Hi

I suppose on depends on which records, may happen that a person is born illegitimately and no father recorded, but sometimes when that person marries, they name a father, could be a made up name or maybe the truth, I would always go with the original birth certificate, if they had been a father surely he would be listed on this, but mistakes are made for sure.

I have one in the same circumstances and that whole branch of the tree has come to a complete standstill.

Good luck with your search

The answer to your question is possibly but without any idea of which records you have already checked and what sort of date you are talking about it is impossible to help further.

Hi  David,we have tried many times to trace the followingof my wifes family
Eliza gough born Cranfield abt 1851 when she was older she went away to work in service no one knows where.
She had a child female who was born inBrill Bucks the birth was reg in Thame in  1872 childs name was Minnie Elizabeth Offen Gough. We saw the birth cert in Milton  Keynes record office and no father was shown. The only reason that Brill was shown is because  her sister Mary Ann was marriedto a William Tipping  who lived at Church  St  Brill, who she was working in service for no idea .they came back to Cranfield,Minnie maried my wifes grand father Richard Ping

The birth was registered in the Sept quarter of 1871.  Brill is in Thame registration district.

Have you worked out where the name Offen comes from because if there is no other evidence of the source it is a reasonable guess for the father's name.  Have you looked for Eliza with various spellings of her surname in 1871 census?  A search for Offen might give a useful lead.

The other place to look is in the quarter session and poor law records in the appropriate record offices.  Mind you I am not really sure which record office you should be looking at although Bucks would be the best bet.  I think Thame was a poorlaw union but that could well be at Oxford.

What you would be looking for is any application made against a father or any out relief from the Union or even the birth at the Union.
