Kiely/Kiley/Kieley etc.
« on: Tuesday 04 September 07 18:54 BST (UK) »

My ggggrandfather was Maurice Kiely (or spelling variation) born in South Meath before 1800. He married Mary or Margaret Clement(s) in Canada & had son Philip about 1816 in Nova Scotia.
Can anyone help with Ireland information on the family?
Thank you.

Yes,

The family as I know it is from Rocky Bay, Isle Madame, Richmond County, Nova Scotia.

Maurice married the daughter of a Loyalist family.

From my research I have determined that the Kiley family was not an original crown land grantee though they ended up with vast acreage.

I have data on the family from their son Philip's marriage onwards but data on Philip before marriage & Maurice remains elusive. I can't even find a death record for Maurice. Perhaps he abandoned the family & returned to Ireland or, more likely, died at sea.

The original Kiley homestead is still standing though it has had some modifications. It is amazing to see the almost 200 year old field stone root cellar (or basement) walls. It sits agross the road from what is known locally as Kiley Pond which drains the local swamp into the Atlantic Ocean.

Local records are rare for the late 18th & early 19th centuries so I'm really flying blind here & any suggestions are always welcome.

Thanks.

Roger
