I am doing my mother's line and have Avis Shepherd (1798 - 1876) of Alvechurch, she married Thomas Beach, her parents were James Shepherd (no dates for him) and Ann Hemming (born 1768)- is there any further history of any of these ancestors. The parents of Thomas Beach were Joseph Beach and Mary Field who were married in Tamworth in 1787. Is there any history back beyond them. I also have a query about the old pubs of Alvechurch, the Swan and the Red Lion. How old are the buildings they are in as I would like to add a photo or two (I have photos of them) to my history which I do in a 12" x 12" photo album (does anyone else scrapbook their history as I do?) I would like to put in photos of buildings or scenery that was there in the time my ancestors lived there, so I look for photos that do not include tarseal, cars or powerlines. Robin

Hello!
The Red Lion was built in the 1930s, replacing the older pub of that name, and it opened in 1940. The Swan pub was also originally in a building opposite the current Swan pub.
A useful little book is "Alvechurch, Past and Present" by Pat Davies and Lorna Sage, isbn 0 9539684 1 3. BPL Publishing.
My ancestors were servants and ag labs in Alvechurch.
Best wishes,
Sally

Thanks Sally, is there any way (as I am in New Zealand) that I can see online any of the old buildings when my ancestors would have lived there - 1700's and 1800's. I want to print off a picture of Alvechurch as it was then to add to the history. What are the chances! Robin

Hello Robin,
The book I recommended is packed with photos from the 19th Century/early 20th Century. Definitely worth while if you can get a copy.
As for online pictures - try a search on Google Pictures.
You could contact the Alvechurch Historical Society - I donŽt have contact numbers but you could do a search - and maybe they could help, or the Alvechurch Parish Council - clerk@alvechurch.gov.uk
Has anyone else reading this got any ideas for finding online pictures?
All the best,
Sally
