Help please...what does Nesa mean
« on: Wednesday 05 September 07 11:54 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Can someone please confirm that the word.... Nesa... means Niece in English Huh

I have been tracing my gggrandmother, and in one census the word Nesa is used.....someone told me it means Niece.

Further down when Enumerating another family he has used the word Nephew with a capital N, so wonder why he used the term nesa for her Undecided

Hi Ambers

Would a 2nd opinion on the Census word help - perhaps,  if you'd like to post the reference and name we could look and see?

Was the family/household  being enumerated from a particular place/country or background?

Cheers

Hi Ambly,

This is the Look-up I asked for in..  Pembroke Requests, hopefully I have done the Link the right way...first time for me to do this Huh Huh

The census was taken in Pembrokeshire...Llanstadwell.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,250655.0.html

I have also got Thread in the Common Room asking for the best way to re-search Hannah Williams...Where do I go now?....where I said I would clarify the meaning of the word nesa, meaning niece.

Also sorry I didn't get notification of your reply Huh

Hi Ambers,

Had a look at both posts -

Have a look at the IGI site

www.familysearch.org

Batch C081191 is for Llanstadwell - you can search this batch and find all the children baptized for Abel & Hannah Williams.

Hannah Williams (1848) is not there, but there is a Hannah Edwards bapt 6 Aug 1848 - daughter of Elizabeth Edwards.

Hope this helps  Smiley

Well spotted.  I should have thought of the IGI earlier.  I always assume that that is the first place people look and forget that not everybody does!    Mea culpa.

Hi Karen,

I did see that Hannah Edwards on the IGI....and as Abels wife was an Edwards before marriage wondered.

It's odd they should point out she wasn't one of their daughters on the census and then give her their surname of Williams...but you never know.

Many thanks Ambers

I don't know exactly what was being noted on the census, but 'nesa' is often a speech abbreviation of 'nesaf', meaning 'next'. The word was used in the phrase
"pobl drws nesaf" = 'the people next door ' and when spoken the final 'f' of nesaf was often dropped.

Hi Rachel,

Thank you, thank you Tongue

You are brilliant, and might have solved my problem.

The old couple (69 & 70) next door have various grandchildren staying with them, so maybe my rellies were helping out with the two year old.

I am off to try and find a family connection now Grin

Glad to have been of help.

I live in France now, and although I have relatives in both North and South Wales, I like to see what is going on in the various geneology forums.

Don't hesitate to ask anything else if you think I might b able to help.

Sincerely,
Rachel Bowen
