Sorry, Lydart, if my posting was redundant to your needs. I was trying to be helpful and respond to your request for information about weather and climate conditions.

No, no Griz ... all info is being saved and sorted for future use ! I've checked out the weather site you gave ... and all the info you supplied is good too ... you should be a BBC weatherman ... maybe you'd get it right !
My first visit to Canada was five years ago, and I went for 8 weeks, not knowing much except where I was staying for the first couple of days, and for two weeks at the end. I just went from city to city, museums, churches, parks, bus rides, train rides .. and lots of walking around, absorbing the atmosphere. I'd been warned before I went that both Canada and Canadians were boring ... and it didn't take me more than a few days to realise how wrong my advisor had been. I LOVED Canada and Canadians ! My only stipulation for this next visit, as for my last, that I can't spend vast amounts of money ... so was very grateful when I discovered that generous Canadians somehow got the idea to pass me on to another kind friend/person they knew further west ... and I got to Kelowna that way, except for the train trip across the middle bit ! You have to believe me that its not the way people in the UK usually do things ... but I got used to it when I lived in Africa (and work to the same hospitality code myself) ...
The internet is obviously going to be useful for checking up and booking trips before I get there ... oh, I knew I had another question ... my cousin in Kelowna tells me that 'seniors' get reduced fares ... what age is a 'senior' in Canada ... here its 60 !

Hi Lydart, that's not easy to answer. Officially you are a senior at age 65 but you can get your pension early in some circumstance. some choose to get it at 60 and get less.
Unoffically, there are discounts for seniors all over the place, but there are no rules, it's whatever the company is offering. for example. Some will give it to you when you reach at 50, some at 55, and other are even stingier :-)).
Often hotels will have a reduced rate for seniors, but you will have to ask. I would say, " I am a senior, do you have a reduced rate? " I would not ask them if you qualify, or what their age cutoff is, or it will become very confusing.
Some hotel chains may have that information posted on their websites. I believe most of them have a special rate.
I am not sure about transport discounts. I drive everywhere. There may be special rates for busses and trains etc but I could be wrong. There is a Senior's reduction for 'BC ferries' fares for residents. I suppose there is one for tourists too. I am sure 'Via Rail' has a senior discount, but check on that if you are planning to cross Canada by train.
There maybe a transit pass for travel in and around Vancouver that might give you a discount. Sadly, Canada ( BC anyway) has not got a lot of railway and bus service, except in the larger cities, Vancouver is the main one in B.C. and everyone drives everywhere. BC is still largely wilderness.( thank God! :-))) Also each Province has its own Provincial Government and therefore its own way of doing things and so there can be differences as you travel across Canada.
Vancouver is quite an expensive city, but it is a spectacularly beautiful one.
It's too bad people say silly things like 'Canadians are boring. ' I never found that being a bore was a national charactaristic. No matter where you go you will meet some duds. However, I think they are in general very friendly and helpful as Americans are when you visit the States. . Anyway, most Canadians come from somewhere else.

You are so right Griz !
... most Canadians come from somewhere else ...
That's exactly the phrase a Sikh taxi driver said to me when we got talking and I asked him if he had encountered racial problems in Canada ...
Thanks for all the help you've given. Fortunately, as I said, I have relatives in BC and Vancouver that I'll be staying with, so the expensive nature of the island will be their problem, not mine !

Apparently via rail has a Senior Canrail pass available to those aged 60 and over http://www.archersdirect.co.uk/content/generate-country-info.php/Canada Good little page with other information as well...
I know that Greyhound bus used to have a senior's discount...but I am not sure of the age or if they still do it...( It is all U.S. run, now, I believe, & the last time I went west it saw a real shmozzle, but I am sure they've smoothed it all out by now ) Can't find the information offhand. J.J.

Hi Lydart,
just noticed this thread..... I've been busy showing some pals from UK around.
Nice to hear you are thinking of visiting us again.
May I suggest you plan your trip in the other direction.
The good weather moves from west to east..... April should be nice in BC but can be cold in Quebec.
Early June can go either way... wet n miserable or suddenly hot. The high humidity usually hits August thru September.
I'm sorry you are not considering Toronto this time across The Pond, so we won't meet but I know you've done us before

Me again !
Is it possible to get to Lloydminster via train/bus if I get off the train in Saskatoon and rejoin the railway on another train at Edmonton ? Hwy 16 seems to go from Sask to Edm.

Hi Lydart Yes it is Its about 3 hrs from Saskatoon to Lloydminster and about the same from Lloydminster to Edmonton. Here's the Lloyd/Edmonton sched for today http://www.greyhound.ca/scripts/en/TicketCenter/Step3.asp
You need the Greyhound bus. When you get off the train in Saskatoon you'll have to get a cab into the city for the bus depot as the train station is on the outskirts. If you have a lot of wait time in Saskatoon it would be really worthwhile to visit the Western Development Museum to see how your ancestors may have lived http://www.wdm.ca/ Lily

For those of you who haven't been on the thread yet, Dollylee has a Canadian Rootschatters posting, so am cheating rather than figuring out who has already been on the thread... But don't take too huge a shortcut,...read through some or all of the postings as we've introduced ourselves & such! http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=291981
