Whin Cross? Whem Cross? Whirn Cross?Place name
« on: Thursday 06 September 07 15:34 BST (UK) »

Hi

I'm trying to decipher a baptism entry in the 1741 OPR for Rathen, and it looks as if the father (Peter Leing) came from somewhere like Whin (or Whem or Whirn) Cross - although I'm not even sure about the "Cross" - it's the nice lady at scotlandspeople who suggested this is what it looks like to her!

Does this ring any bells with anyone who knows the area around Rathen / Aberdour / Fraserburgh? Even if your suggestion seems a bit wild I'm happy to consider it - the only thing I am pretty sure of is that the first 2 letters are "Wh" (so that leaves plenty of room for an imaginative answer!)

Assuming that the first two letters are "Wk" the Royal Mail Postal Address Book of 1998/99 has the following places or more likely farms within Fraserburgh, Strichen, and New Aberdour:

Whitebog  AB43 7BU
Whitecairns  AB43 8XD
Whitehill  AB43 6SA
Whiterashes  AB43 7BD
Whitestones  AB43 7LL
Whitestripe  AB 43 7TQ
Whitewell  AB43 7BT

Somehow I don't think this is going to get you any further forward   Huh Huh

Probably not, but it was worth a try, so thanks!
