Hi,
I am wondering if some kind person could do a couple of lookups for me please when they have a few spare moments.
Hubbies grandad is Frank Ravenscroft and his marriage cert in 1917 shows his age as 41 which would make his year of birth as 1876. I need to verify his actual date of birth and confirmation of his mothers name - fathers name of Edward shown on marriage cert - and details of where he was born if possible. I believe he was born in Willaston.
Also, I would like to verify details of Edward's birth - exact date, place parents names, occupation etc. Census records show he was born in 1847 in Willaston - although some census's show 1843 as his year of birth. Think his father may be Thomas and he married an Elizabeth Merrill in 1870.
Hope this is not asking too much and thank you in advance.
Crystal

Hi crystal - Records Offices do not have the sort of records that give the information you require - they will have religious rather than civil records, so you may find a baptism. Baptism records generally give the date of the baptism, the child's name, the parents' names (eg John & Mary Smith) and address (often "of this parish"). A few will give dates of birth, most don't. To look for a baptism without place of birth is time-consuming to say the least!
Your request would be satisfied by applying for a copy of Frank's birth certificate, either from the GRO or the relevant local register office. The cost is £7. The FreeBMD site shows one Frank Ravenscroft in the period 1875-1877, registered in the September quarter of 1875 at Nantwich ref 8a 339.

Hi mshrmh & genechaser
Thanks for your replies. Sorry for the confusion, I should have said baptism records - excuse my senior moment. I do have the references, I was just hoping to endorse my findings as such, sending for the certificates will have to wait for a while as saving my pennies at the moment. Thanks for your help anyway.

Hi Crystal, I will have a look through the Wybunbury parish registers next week, and with any luck I might find what you're looking for. Jayson

Jayson - your a star!!
I would be really grateful if you could check the details for me.
Have the following info if its any help - Frank born 1875, have found Vol 8a, P339 on FREEBMD - hope its the right one. The entry shows Nantwich but census records show his birthplace as Willaston. If I am correct his father is Edward and there is an older brother called Henry.
Edward I think was born in Nov 1847 in Willaston and think his father was John - sorry made mistake with 1st post. Edward died 12 Nov 1905 at Monks Coppenhall, have his death cert.
Don't think I have any more info but if I think of anything I'll let you know.
Many thanks
Crystal

Thanks for the extra details, Crystal. I noticed that there are a number of entries in the Wybunbury Grave Register relating to the surname you're interested in. Jayson

Hi Crystal,
I don't know if you already have this, but there is a baptism on http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/ for Edward Ravenscroft on 30th November 1847 at Wybunbury, son of John and Sarah RAVENSCROFT, residence Willaston, John is a joiner.
Both the Nantwich and Wybunbury parish records are online at the site, but they only go up to 1871 (I think) so you will still need the lookup for Frank.
Hope this helps,
Jean

Hi Crystal
This is what I have found for you in the Wybunbury parish registers.
Baptisms:
1840 May 17 Edwin s/o of John & Elizabeth Ravenscroft, Willaston, joiner
1841 Dec 5 John s/o of John & Elizabeth Ravenscroft, Willaston, joiner
1847 Nov 30 Edward s/o John & Sarah Ravenscroft, Willaston, joiner
Marriage:
1845 Aug 24 John Ravenscroft, full age, widower, joiner, of Willaston, son of Thomas Ravenscroft, weaver, and Sarah Robinson, full age, spinster, of Nantwich, dau of Charles Robinson, cordwainer.
Present: John Leigh, Ann Jones
Burial:
1843 Oct 29 Elizabeth wife of John Ravenscroft, Willaston, 35
Wybunbury Grave Register (Transcript) 1807-1875:
1843 Oct 29 Elizth Ravenscroft, Willaston at head of Tate's stone aged 35, died 27th.
I couldn't find John's marriage to Elizabeth in the Wybunbury parish register, it might be worth having a look in the Nantwich parish registers just in case they married there.
If you have a look at the link Jean gave you to the Cheshire Parish Registers Project, John and Elizabeth's marriage might be listed.

Hi Jayson
You must be a mind reader, I had just said to hubbie that I was going to send you a message when up pops your message. Was going to say, sorry hadn't answered but mother in law and baby grandaughter have both been poorly so its been a bit hectic.
Jayson, thats brilliant, thanks very much for finding all that out for me -you have answered a couple of queries for me. Firstly, confirmation of Edwards year of birth as different census's give varying age and was a little unsure if I was following the right connection but your info has confirmed I have the right Edward. Secondly, I had recently discovered that John had died quite young, not found his year of death yet buts its before 1851 as Sarah married again to a William Lovatt. Have found young Edward with them on 1861 census. However, on 1871 census, Edward is not there but a John Ravenscroft, stepson is and I have been puzzling over him and where he fitted in. Your info shows that John senior had obviously been married before and this John was his son. Oh, aren't families lovely! they love to send you crackers trying to puzzle things out!
You have also given me another generation to work on - Thomas, John's father, this is completely new ground to me - I was wondering where to go next, now its sorted! Thomas's occupation is given as 'weaver' have you any idea what type of weaving it might refer to? Looks like my next book list at the Library will be Cheshire occupations, more late night reading.
Thnaks for the burial info on Elizabeth, more leaves for the tree. As she is also new to me, I will try and get some background on her. Thanks for trying to find the marriage, I'll have a look on that site Jean suggested. Do you thing it srange that Franks baptism was not to be found - I'll have to do some more checking into this, nothing about Frank has been easy. The family do not know anything more as these things were not discussed much then.
Jean
Thanks for that link, I will have alook as soon as things are back to normal, its sounds like it should be interesting.
Better go now, thanks again, espcially you Jayson I'm really grateful.
Crystal.

You're welcome Crystal. It was pleasure! Sorry to hear that your mother in law and granddaughter have been unwell - hope they're feeling better.
I have two more extracts from the Wybunbury Grave Register which seem to relate to the family you are researching:
1840 Jun 5 child of Ravenscroft's, Willaston, at head of Tate's stone, an infant
1846 Jul 9 child of Ravenscroft's, Willaston, at head of Tate's stone, aged 10 months
The first burial looks as if it might have been young Edwin. Can check the burial register if you want confirmation of this?

Thanks for that, mother in law is much better but grandaughter has to have operation tomorrow but should be fine after that.
Thanks for the extra info and would like to take you up on your offer of checking the burial register if you wouldn't mind. The 1st date does seem to tie in with Edwin, the 2nd date I think may be Edward's elder sister Emma - she was born 1846 and could not find her on later censuses so did wonder if she had died. Could I be cheeky and ask if you could check that for me as well. The IGI states that John died before 1851 but have no more info yet so will not ask for that to be checked as it will be too long winded - if I can find more reliable info later on, could I ask for a check up on the burial register then?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Crystal

Hi Crystal
I'll be looking at the Wybunbury parish registers anyway so it's no problem. I'm sure it will not be too difficult to locate John Ravenscroft's burial as you have a rough idea of the time period.
I'll let you what I have found this coming Tuesday - all being well.
