I have details of John McMaster & Margaret McPherson John died May 1844 aged 82 and Margaret died August 1857 aged 88. Both in Inverlochy Cemetery across from Inverlochy Castle.
I have details of the family but I would like to know something earlier (parents) of both.
A son John, in fact all children were born Tomaharich, a hamlet on the north of Fort William. Ben Nevis on the east and Loch Eil and Loch Linnhe on the west.
John & Margaret had 12 children the 1st Mary 4/11/1797(baptised) where do I go for marriage perhaps 1796 or 1797?
I have details from 1841 and 1851 Census for Kilmonivaig.
Some (3) of the children came to Australia - 'Brilliant' 21/1/1838.
I do so hope someone can set me going back!
Leona.

There is an index of burials in the various local burial ground in the local library,
I thought that one had another name but the RCAHMS just seem to call it Inverlochy Cemetery
(NN 1205 7528) Burying Ground (NAT) OS 25" map (1871)
Overlooking the branch road to Inverlochy Castle is a rustic little burying ground beside a rocky eminence old Lochaber folk say that no one is entitled to be buried here except descendants of those who fought in the Battle of Inverlochy in 1645 (NN17NW 3) but they admit this rule has been broken for many years. D B MacCulloch 1938
This grave-yard is still in use. Visited by OS (CFW) 17 July 1961
No change. Visited by OS (NKB) 11 May 1970
The graveyard (burial-ground) has the appearance of having gone out of use. Visited by RCAHMS (DE), 20 April 2007 Incidentally there has been an archaeological dig taking place in Fort William for the last couple of weeks and they have been having a look around on the ridge by the cemetery to see if they can any evidence of the battle though I think it has been done mostly with metal detectors.

Weren't the McMasters around Gairlochy? I seem to remember there was an old burial ground around there with a lot of McMasters.
Martin
PS
I see they were Ardgour to around Loch Eil but sure I have seen a mention of them up towards Loch Lochy. If you have broadband, this book is interesting

Martin, from recollections on our family tree: "After the family had been chased out of Inverlochy Castle some went north to Morven and I think some of your forebears were amongst them, but whether as a family or loyal retainers, I have no idea. In the course of time, they retuned to Tomnaharick. In 1912, when I first went to Scotland, I was told by a previous visitor that there were two old McMaster men still at Fort William, but they had been so rude to others of the family that I was advised to pass them by. When I visited Tomnaharick there was an old stone building standing and occupied at the time. When I went again in 1938, it had completely disappeared, but there were some graves, three I think, which would have been the garden or home enclosure. I have copies of the inscriptions, but hve mislaid them. They would probably have been your great uncles, and dated back to the early 1800's"
These words are what I started to look at and progress from there.
Thank you, Leona.

That sounds quite possible, there are lots of very small burial grounds and often just marker stones to indicate the burials (if that!) and if you are lucky there might be some initials on the stones. Though it seems this one did have proper inscriptions.
It looks from the old maps site that the township was roughly where the present day farm is located.

You can just see Inverlochy Castle in the background on the bottom one at the right though it is quite dark, have to try on a sunnier day.
I am wondering about just photographing all the graves in some of the smaller ones like that one.

Don't tell me that you live in this wonderful area. and you are a photographer as well.
Perhaps you could photograph the headstones and advertise them through the local Historical Society.
I have a little bit more infomation; " They are buried in Inverlochy cemetery, on a knoll just across from the ruins of Inverlochy Castle. Also buried there is their daughter Ann McPherson, her husband Duncan and their children John & Sarah."
Perhaps, if I am not too rude, if you go and photograph the burial grounds, could you look for these name. John & Margarets children who left and came to Australia were John, Una and Margaret McMaster and the one left behind were Mary, Christian, Peggie & Angus (They could have all died at an early age - don't know anything of them.) and in 1851 Census they show Margaret (widow) Donald, Ewen and a daughter of Margaret, Catherine. It was Ewen and Donald who did the headstone for their parents. Perhaps Catherine died between 1851 Census and when the boys did the headstone (this could have been after the Mother died in 1857. Catherine could also be buried there as well.
Well now, thank you again for your trouble, it is so lovely to have heard from you.
Cheers Leona.

I photocopied the MI for there yesterday, wondering about photocopying the whole booklet as I suspect it is out of print. There are not any more McMaster listed, I presume there are more burials there but they are either unmarked or illegible. There are 16 graves on the list. There is no Duncan.
As you can see it is a bit of a mess!

This is the booklet that I got the list from
Title Pre-1855 gravestone inscriptions in Lochaber / collected and edited by Lyn Tatler and Roger Tatler Publisher Roy Bridge : Lyn Tatler & Roger Tatler, 1980 Year 1980
There is a whole series of similar ones or pre-1855 inscriptions listed in the Highland Library catalogue. I will try and copy the list to the Resources area.
