WATKIN & MORRIS Llanfyllin
« on: Saturday 18 December 04 17:05 UTC (UK) »

This is a new part of the Country for me Cheesy

Just found the marriage entry for Rees Watkin & Maria Morris in 1872 in Llanfyllin aCivil Marriage, so will be sending for the marriage after Christmas.

Found Maria & Rees in the 1871 Census both in the Township of Llanfyllin at Bodran & Bodydon Huh

Maria born about 1842 in Llanrhaiadr-y-Mochant
Rees born about 1844 in Llanfyllin.

A quick look at North Wales BMD shows quite a few Maria Morris's for the area during this time.
Anyone come across this couple before?
Love to hear from you. Grin

This is the only Rees I could find in the 1851 Montgomeryshire census for the Llanfyllin parish:

HO107/2499 folio 241, page 18

WATKIN, David, head, m, age 75, farmer 15 acres, born MGY Llanfihangel, Brynyfunon
WATKIN, Mary, wife, m, age 75 born MGY Carno, Brynyfunon
WATKIN, Rees, grandson, u, age 8 Brynyfunon

He's with his grandparents.   Do you know his parents names? if so I could look for them too.

There are 2 Maria Morris:

MORRIS, Maria, dau age 10 scholar born DEN Llanrhaiadr, Wernole, /f562/p14

MORRIS, Maria, dau u age 3 born MGY Llanrhaiadr, Gegin Budr, /f659/p30

The first entry shows birthplace as Denbyshire, the second Montgomeryshire.  If you know the parents names then I can check the families and see which is correct.

Dear Jan,

Sorry not to get back sooner.

The marriage certificate has just come, they married on the 3rd May 1872 the Tabernacle Chapel Llanfyllin.
Rees was 27 & Maria was 24.

Rees father was EVAN WATKIN a labourer
Maria's father was THOMAS MORRIS a shoemaker

a HANNAH MORRIS was a Witness.
I've looked on the 1871 Census for the fathers but could find no one that fits the bill.

Thanks for looking at the 51 Census for me, appreciate your help Wink

I've found Maria in the 1851 with her family:-

HO107/2499, folio 659, page 30

MORRIS, Thomas, h, m, 39, shoemaker j'yman, MGY Llansantffraid, Gegin Budr, /f658/p29
MORRIS, Elizabeth, w, m, 43, , DEN Llanrhaiadr, Gegin Budr, /f658/p29
MORRIS, Lewis, s, u, 12, miller's carrier, DEN Llanrhaiadr, Gegin Budr, /f658/p29
MORRIS, Hannah, d, u, 11, , DEN Llanrhaiadr, Gegin Budr, /f659/p30
MORRIS, Emma, d, u, 8, , DEN Llanrhaiadr, Gegin Budr, /f659/p30
MORRIS, Elizabeth, d, u, 6, , DEN Llanrhaiadr, Gegin Budr, /f659/p30
MORRIS, Maria, d, u, 3, , MGY Llanrhaiadr, Gegin Budr, /f659/p30
MORRIS, Jane, d, u, 1, , MGY Llanrhaiadr, Gegin Budr, /f659/p30

It looks like it was Maria's sister Hannah who was one of the marriage witnesses.

This could possibly be Rees' parents & siblings:

WATKIN, Evan, h, m, 34, ag. lab., MGY Llanfihangel, Ty newith, /f241/p19
WATKIN, Margaret, w, m, 30, , MGY Llanfihangel, Ty newith, /f241/p19
WATKIN, Mary, d, u, 6, , MGY Llanfihangel, Ty newith, /f241/p19
WATKIN, Elizabeth, d, u, 4, , MGY Llanfihangel, Ty newith, /f241/p19
WATKIN,Thomas, s, u, 1, , MGY Llanfyllin, Ty newith, /f241/p19

I think the 8 year old Rees that I posted before in my earlier message is "your" Rees with his grandparents.  No other Evan or Rees Watkins show up on the census.

Just for the record also, there are some other Rees families who are more than likely related:-

WATKIN, Edward, h, m, 73, farmer 10 acres, MGY Llanfyhangel, Braichwaen, /f241/p19
WATKIN, Rebeca, w, m, 75, , MGY Llanfyhangel, Braichwaen, /f241/p19

WATKIN, David, h, m, 39, farmer of 30 acre, MGY Llanfyhangel, Rhydlleche, /f241/p19
WATKIN, Anne, w, m, 50, , MGY Llanfyllin, Rhydlleche, /f241/p19
WATKIN, Mary, d, u, 10, , MGY Llanfihangel, Rhydlleche, /f241/p19
WATKIN, David, s, u, 7, , MGY Llanfihangel, Rhydlleche, /f241/p19
MORGAN, John, ld, m, 25, ag. lab., MGY Llanfihangel, Rhydlleche, /f241/p19
MORGAN, Margaret, w, m, 26, , MGY Llanfihangel, Rhydlleche, /f241/p19

I'll see what I can find on 1861 and get back to you as soon as I can.

That's great! I really appreciate all your help Grin

Anything you could find on the 1861 census would be a great help as I am unfamiliar with this area.
