hi Ricky1,
I have just done some checking, and it seems Richard (Hews) married Catherine (?) and had a daughter Ruth, so I think the first entry you found was the correct one, but it still doesn't tell me where she was born, her brother William is the same, I'm sure it is Wales, but how do I find that out...any suggestions???

The 1851 birthplace for Catherine Hughes reads Finding Norths, which is probably Finedon in Northamptonshire. Finedon is only 15 miles from Gt Gidding, and is much more likely than Wales
There's a marriage in 1815 in Gt Gidding between Richard Hewes and Catherine Garratt on Hunts Marriage Index
I can't see a burial of Richard in Hunts 1815-41
Whose brother is William - Ruth's or Catherine's? If it's Catherine's surely you know her surname??

Ooops..talk about going up the creek without a paddle....
I'm getting confused....I have info that Catherine Hughes 78 years (spinster/ sister of William Hughes/Sister in law of Alice (nee Freeman) Buried 30/12/1859 at Great Gidding. So she was born around 1781.
So she wasn't married, and therefore couldn't have married Richard.
But William (b: abt 1768) had a son Richard b: 05/01/1794 so he could have married this Catherine Garratt.
I think finding Catherine and Williams birthplace is going to a problem...
I have posted a request for someone who lives near Great Gidding to photograph some HUGHES headstones for me, I'm hoping for a reply and maybe this will give me some clues...
Also do you know where I can get the marriage details for William Hughes (Hughs/Hews/Hewes) and Alice Freeman married 21 Oct 1792 Great Gidding from?.
thank you for your help Debbie Hughes Northam Western Australia

If you're confused, we don't stand a chance!
What information do you have that YOU have verified, as opposed to having been told by someone else? Do you have the death cert for this 1859 Catherine Hughes? Seems a bit suspicious that there's only one Catherine Hughes in Gt Gidding in 1841 and 1851 when there apparently should have been two, and none in 1861.
I think before going on hunt a for a Catherine born c1781 you need to establish that there really was such a person. I have my doubts!
There were plenty of Hughes in Hunts in the 18th century - other than it's a Welsh surname do you have any evidence that William was Welsh?
Gt Gidding parish register has been filmed by the LDS so can be ordered and viewed at your nearest LDS Family History Centre, of which there are quite a few in Oz. Alternatively you can pay Huntingdon Records Office to provide you with details, which should give you witnesses names - Hunts Marriage Index shows both William and Alice as residents of the parish of Gt Gidding
