Hi I have just received a marriage certificate and it looks as if it was solemnised at the Methodist Free Church in 1863.
Can someone confirm for me there was such a church please? The Minister appears to ne Jonathan Longbottom?
Any other information as to it's location etc gratefully received. Thanks Marlene

Hi, In a local history book on Spalding. There is a Methodist Church in Broad Street, Spalding. This church was built in 1886 but another church had been in this place from 1826. A steward of the church in 1851 was a Henry Longbottom. A George Longbottom (1845-1919) is mentioned as a preacher from 1862. His great grandfather is said to have been a friend and fellow worker with John Wesley. There was also a Jonty Longbottom who rented a small shop belonging to my grandfather at 1, Commercial Road, Spalding when my father was a boy. Father recounted to me tales of pranks they played on him to me. My father was born in 1907. I wonder if this was the Jonathan Longbottom. Perhaps Jonty was short for Jonathan? You did not mention the names of the people on the wedding certificate. Regards Keith, Spalding born 1939 and still living here.

Hi Keith
The marriage cert Marlene mentions above was received from me, and she thought it more prudent for me to join up and let you know the names, etc.
The participants of the marriage were Rebecca WRIGHT and William RATE. The marriage took place on 9 August 1863 and the witnesses were John LANGFORD and Sarah Jane GROUNDER.
Rebecca subsequently named her child Sarah Jane RATE WISEMAN b 29 Mar 1874, but the father is named as William WISEMAN, and Rebecca is also shown as Rebecca WISEMAN, but we can find no record of this marriage. This has caused me (and Marlene) no end of headaches!
Sarah Jane RATE married Arthur EVANS in 1895, and they were married in the Parish Church, so I presume this means that this was a CoE marriage?
These are my husband's ancestors, who until four years ago also lived in Spalding, as have all his family for years. I also lived there for several years, and could kick myself for not getting into this area of research while I was there!

Sorry... I'm back. After watching the rugby, I had a day in the kitchen due to the fact that my entire house had been emptied out and carpet layers were going through.
Just have to get the computer (and all my paperwork) back in the study and I'll be back at it again!
In the meantime... That John Wiseman interests me... Sarah Jane named her father as John RATE (deceased) on her marriage certificate. I wonder if there is any connection?
Keith, I did already have the 1881 census. The Arthur EVANS recorded is the same Arthur EVANS that Sarah Jane eventually married. I can't figure out what happened to Rebecca after that though, except that she married John ALLEN in 1887.

Can you please tell me where you obtained this info? It does definitely appear to be all the correct people, and helps me to confirm which birth cert to send for to identify Rebecca WRIGHT (there were two - Spalding Sep 1841 14/511 or Spalding Jun 1842 14/529) and I think the Sep 1841 will the the correct one so I can save myself £3!
Valda, on the other thread also found one Robert Sewell RATE born to William and Ann. I presume this info comes from either the PR or LDS, but I like to know so that I can keep my records straight as to where the info comes from.
Thanks again for all your help.
Leah

Hi Leah, Thought you would have the 1881 census. I looked at the link to the earlier thread posted by Geoff and found it interesting. Nearly as intersting as searching for my own families. Next time I am in town I will look in the libairy to see if they are in the records of burial at the town cemetery. The other information you ask about on your other post at 09-27-23 was from the Counties in England web site & family search.org Regards Keith
