Does anyone know where Dunnigton, Lincolnshre is?
« on: Monday 17 March 08 13:26 GMT (UK) »

Whilst researching a Wilson line in the family I find many references to a town called Dunnington, Lincolnshire.  I can find Dunnington in Yorkshire but not in Lincolnshire.  Perhaps the Parish boundaries changed at some point in history, but I am in the dark here.  Any help is appreciated in pinpointing this town.

Could it be Donington?

There's Donington (between Boston and Spalding)

and Donington on Bain (a few miles SW of Louth.

Definitely not Donington.  If you Google "William Wilson Dunnington Lincolnshire" you will see a couple of sites where this location is referenced but there is no exact location.  On the LDS IGI's the same location reference is given to William Wilson - marriage to Alic 1585.  I have tried to search old parish maps but without success. Still puzzled,

It seems you are talking about the days when Shakespeare was still warm in his grave.

The fact that the six surviving signatures of the Bard are all spelt differently (including two different versions in his will) and none of them spelt as SHAKESPEARE, I have to ask how much reliance can be placed on the 17th century rendition of a Lincolnshire place name.

Everything in the IGI entry that you cite seems to be made up, rather than fact

About 1560
About 1638
About 1585

all based on some document written in the early days of American settlemant.

From Genuki
The name Donington is from the Old English duning+tun, or "Estate of Dunna". In the 1086 Domesday book, the village is given as Duninctune.

Thanks Geoffe,

You are probably correct. I'll move on now.
