DOWNER and HERRINGTON - Breamore, Hampshire
« on: Sunday 09 September 07 11:49 BST (UK) »

I've had some really useful help from the wonderful people here and am wondering if I could impose again. I'm looking for information on my great great grandparents. Here's what I have:

James Downer born 1811 and Fanny Herrington born 1811. Married 24 Feb 1825 at Breamore, Hampshire.
My great grandfather was their son Edwin Downer who was born in 1846.

I'd like to find out James Downer's date of death. Also things like the names of their parents and siblings, etc. Thanks in advance!

James was a widower in 1851 - Fanny probably died in 1850, death registered in Fordingbridge RD Mar qtr 8 144.

James himself died 1861-1871.

I would put his birth date as closer to 1805 since he is shown as 46 in 1851, and 57 in 1861.  Ages in the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest 5.  So Fanny also may have been born a few years before 1811.  Otherwise they would have been very young to marry in 1825 (14, legal, but still young).

There is a submitted baptism entry on the IGI for James, son of James and Ann Downer, in 1803.  This may be worth following up.

Also this may be of use, from the Hampshire Record Office catalogue:
Quote
George Herrington (28) of Lyndhurst: born Woodgreen and when 15 went to Charlton, Downton, Wilts to work for Philip Whittle for a year for £4 year; then returned to Woodgreen for 3 years; then lived with Thomas Powell of Breamore, yeoman for 6 months and hired himself to him for a further year; has a wife Susannah and children Mary (8 ), George (5) and Fanny (3)

Otherwise, I've drawn a blank for Fanny.

A James Downer aged 82 was buried in Breamore 18 Oct 1837

Okay, thank you. The James Downer aged 82 you mention is probably, at a guess, my great grandfather's brother.

Little Nell, the quote from the Hampshire Record Office catalogue - does it have a date perchance?

yes, it does.  It was 1811.  Sorry it didn't make it to the post - I had to retype it three times 'cos PC decided it wanted some time off!

I would have said more likely to be his father or uncle rather than brother.

I wonder if you have progressed any further with this family.

Fanny, daughter of George and Susannah Harrington of Woodgreen, christened March 13 1808

James, son of James and Ann Downer of Woodgreen, christened July 24 1803

Some of the Breamore Parish Records have been transcribed and are on line at

Looks as though you and I have covered this ground before.

Sorry about that.
