Faces of Oxfordshire - have you added a face?
« on: Sunday 09 September 07 19:22 BST (UK) »

OFHS's "Faces of Oxfordshire - Family Faces" website is part of the "Oxfordshire 2007" celebration of 1,000 years of the county's existence. The website celebrates our Oxfordshire ancestors - those who were born in the county, or moved to it, or have some other significant link with Oxfordshire. And by 'Oxfordshire', we mean anywhere that is today in county, even if at the time it was part of Berkshire. Unlike other websites, this one is completely non-elitist: it doesn't matter whether your ancestors were rich or poor, academic or illiterate. We want to celebrate them as human beings connected with our county.

Another novel aspect of the site is that we take the work out of web page construction for you. Submissions can be via email or on paper, via 'snail mail'. We do all the 'techie' work, formatting the text and fine tuning the pictures.

Each 'Face' nominated gets their own set of webpages - a home page with their portrait and key facts about their life, plus one or two additional pages with a larger version of the portrait and sometimes a further picture relevant to their life. There are also slideshows featuring all the Faces. These slideshows now have improved navigational tools and a choice of automatic or manual modes.

The website already has 130 Faces, nominated by descendants in Oxfordshire, other parts of England, France, Australia, Canada and the USA. A sign of its success is that if you enter the words 'faces' and 'oxon' (or 'Oxfordshire') into Google, this website comes up top of the list, despite their being a wide range of other "Faces of Oxfordshire" projects. And because of its high Google rating, people featured on the website are likely to be picked up by family historians using the search engine to seek references. This can help you make new contacts researching your ancestors - though we don't publish your contact details unless you want us to.

But time is running out - "Oxfordshire 2007" is coming to an end and the site will be 'frozen' from the end of 2007. We will not be able to accept any more nominations after 8th December 2007. So if you want to include one of your ancestors, please act now. Go to the homepage of the website (http://faces.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/) to find out what you need to do.
