Hi Aimee,
this has been difficult- took a while to trace them in 1861 due to Ancestry transcription as Suiters.

Doesn't look as though Catherine is there though:

1871 RG10; Piece: 4988; Folio: 32; Page: 37

Railway Terrace D Pit (?) Bourne Moor

George Surtees head 41 yrs coal miner b Chester Durham
Mary wife 50 yrs b Northumberland
Thomas 16 yrs coal miner b Bourn Moor Durham
John 13 yrs coal miner   b Bourne Moor
George William 4 yrs scholar b Bourne Moor
Mary Jane Punton 22 yrs
Thomas Punton 15 yrs  coal miner
John Punton 12 yrs coal miner
Alice Punton 7 yrs

all named as children and born Bourne Moor- some ages have been scored through by enumerator and are difficult to read
names have been transcribed as Surtus and Punter - not sure re Punter - checked re Free BMD - marriage 1870 - George Surtees to Mary Punton
and a death 1869- Catharine aged 39 yrs but cannot find a death for young Catherine.

best wishes

you may well have followed George in later censuses but if not he remarries in 1884 to a Dorothy - there are 2 possibles.

Hi Heywood
Thanks for the info. My g grandfather m a Catherine Surtees in 1880. I hav'nt got their marriage cert yet to find out  if her fathers name was George.
If I am on the right Catherine it looks to me like her father George m 3 times
in1861 he is with Catherine, In 71 as you found with Mary, in 81 with Mary and I have just found him with Dorothy in 91, As Catherine would only have been about 10 in 1871 I wonder where she was? Thanks for you help
Cheers Aimee

It might be better to get the certificate to see if she is George's daughter then. He married Mary in 1870 so George William must have been wife Catherine's child so it is not as if he sent his first children to a grandparent.
I have had a look at later censuses and it does look as though she could be George's daughter though.

I looked to see who married George - it could be a  Catherine Charlton - only one turns up in earlier censuses - 1851- a servant and 1841 with some people called Lester so I can't find maternal grandparents in 1871 to see if Catherine is there. She may have been in hospital or just missed off the census perhaps...A mystery ...
