Charles Morris - Europe/US/Australia
« on: Monday 10 September 07 14:36 BST (UK) »

Trying to find the background of Charles MORRIS, a gold miner. Australian records indicate he was born in Italy or Austria in 1833 (conflicts between these two countries changed their borders) to parents Andrew and Mary MORRIS (nothing Italian/Austrian about any of these names).

He was naturalized in Australia in 1901, with that record indicating he arrived in Sydney in 1856 aboard the "Sea Witch". I only found one 1856 passenger list for the "Sea Witch" from San Francisco to Sydney. There were only 17 passengers, with no Charles Morris but a Charles Thomas (recorded incorrectly?). This voyage would fit in with his occupation of gold miner ie; coming from the Californian goldfields to try out his luck in the NSW goldfields.

I have all his details from his arrival in Australia, its just any US or Italian/Austrian records I'm interested in. Any help available, or directions where to start?

Thanks

As you say none of the names you have sound Italian/Austrian/German- could be have changed his name to something more English sounding either before or after arriving in Australia?
IGI lists a William Morris, son of Andrew and Mary, born 1848 Kinghorne, Fife, Scotland, died 1930 N.Z. but it's a submitted record.

I don't think that Morris would be related to mine - thanks anyway.

There's a second Morris from Austria who was naturalised about the same time - Mandel Morris (in 1903).  Can't find any other trace of him, though!  Maybe it is supposed to be 'Mendel' Morris?

Another thought - which church did he marry in?

Thanks for your interest Jorose. I had seen that entry previously, however, didn't follow it up. I've have searched NSW Deaths for MORRIS -parents Andrew and Mary, but only my Charles turn up, plus 3 other unrelated persons. I did find the death of Manel MORRIS but wrong parents. Then again, I suppose it all depends on how well the informant knew the deceased.

As for your Church of Marriage query for my Charles MORRIS - All Saints Tumut, NSW, to Ellen LYNCH in 1860. Cert indicates place of birth Italy with parents Andrew (a farmer) and Mary. His Death Cert has place of birth Austria with parents Andrew and Mary, the informant being his daughter.
