Have had some wonderful help from Sue Teakle who recommended this site to me. I am researching Henry Hill, Cordwainer, born about 1819 at Broadwell. He is on the 1851 census and he has a lodger, Charlotte Daniel from Sherrif's Lench in Worcestershire. By 1852 Ann, the first of 10 children born to Henry and Charlotte is born according to the 1871 census.I have never been able to find a marriage for Henry and Charlotte so am assuming they did not marry? However, he was about 10 years older and so I am beginning to wonder whether he was married before. He would have been about 33 when Ann was born and this seems a little old for his first child. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Rob

Suz you are very kind, thank you. I noticed that he was described as married and wondered whether this was embarrasment at "shacking up" in 1851. She had no such qualms however! Not sure how the census was taken - presume the enumerator filled in the forms but did he speak to people individually or did the head speak for everyone? I gave up looking at the BMD's in 1852 - assumed the morals were different then -should know better given my families history. Will try to see if I can find a previous marriage. Rob
