Is it true there was a tunnel that linked Carlisle Castle with the CatherdraL?
My family were discussing this recently, remembering that my Mum (a native of Carlisle) used to say Mary Queen of Scots used the tunnel while "staying" at the castle.
Is there any truth in this and is the tunnel still there?

I'm from Carlisle and that's the first time I've heard of that, but it would be fun if there were one. It would certainly be a good tourist attraction.

Hi all, I heard of this tunnel when I was at school, (not telling you how long ago!), but the assumption is it is long gone or they would have uncovered it when the dual-carriageway was built in between the castle and the cathedral. Morskaj.

I heard this story too.
I wodered about the bypass etc as well, and indeed the underpass to the castle and the below ground barrier.
On the other hand something I was reading, said that originally - pre-Roman? times? The dip between the castle and where Tullie House is was a really deep ravine, which has been gradually filled in over time. I'm not sure what take that puts on the story!

My grandmother worked as cleaner at Tullie House many years ago and often talked of part of a tunnel beneath the house she had to enter and found rather disconcerting. That's the only information that I have; am also from Carlisle and heard the rumour many times but have yet to hear of any proof and sadly my Grandmother died in the 80s so can't obtain anything further. On the same subject, I do know that Binns department store owned a very large undergound area beneath the paved area of English street in front of the town hall - leading right across to the Victorian public toilets which are now bricked up - if anyone remembers those?!
There is also talk of tunnels in the southern part of the city which led from railwaymen's houses to the station but I have yet to find any evidence of this either.

Have a look at the Steve Bulman's page on Carlisle Castle, www.stevebulman.f9.co.uk, it says that a writer in the last century was writing about how the walls were removed, he said, 'The parapet and platform of the west wall near the castle are still complete, and are defended by King Richard's, or the Tile Tower, which contains large apartments, and several recesses, with a subterraneous passage to the castle'. Sounds like it was still there at that time, (early 19th century).

I'm so glad to have my mother's mutterings confirmed! 
Would be nice if they could ever find and excavate what remains of the tunnels - would be a fantastic visitor attraction!

It rather depends where Richard's Tower is ... the original suggestion was that there was a tunnel from the cathedral.
Here's an online book about the cathedral (inc castle) http://www.gutenberg.org/files/19881/19881-h/19881-h.htm (no mention of a tunnel though  )

The 'Tile Tower' is outside the castle near the millenium bridge. www.edgeguide.co.uk has photographs of it. Maybe the tunnel started at the Tile Tower and ended at the cathedral?
