Ballinakill
« on: Tuesday 11 September 07 13:34 UTC (UK) »

Hello. Is Ballinakill in Co Offaly? My great grandfather, William Flynn married Bridget Shaw in about 1871 and there is no record of ithe marriage in Offaly in the GRO
All his children were born in Ballinakill and registered in Philipstown, Co Offaly.
I know there is a Ballinakill in Co Laois. Could they have married there yet have the children registered in Offaly?
I hope my query is clear!

Marriage usually, but not always, took place in the bride's church which might explain why marriage seems to be in a different area than where the children were born.

Thankyou, but is Ballinakill in Offaly or Laois? I can't find it on a map and Google is a bit confusing.
Best wishes

Good site for searching Irish townlands, parishes, etc. is:
www.seanruad.com

P.S. there are 5 townlands called Ballinakill but parishes, counties, etc. are given for each. When searching the site and no results come up try searching part of the word and changing the default setting from 'must match exactly'

Poppyo,

According to Originsnetwork.com there is a townland in Offaly (Kings Co.) called Ballinakill, Big.

It is in the parish of Horseleap or Ardnurcher and lies in the Union of Tullamore.

There is a townsland of Ballinakill in the barony of Coolestown, outside the town of Edenderry. There are the ruins of ancient church there and a well preserved graveyard there. Flynn is a popular name in this locality

Thank you for your answer. What is the name of the cemetery? Is it just Ballinakill Cemetery?

yes it has recently been cleaned up and the Edenderry Historical Socities 'Then and Now' book lists all of those who are buried there. They have another publication coming out hopefully early 2009 which is a complete list of 21 graveyards in the locality, called 'Carved in Stone' and will be a great help for all looking to trace ancestors.
