Hi there,

I'd be most grateful if you could please keep an eye open for any mention of John White and his wife Ellen or Helen (changes in the census!).

He was born in Grinton area around 1808. John worked in Brompton and Snainton as a gardener. His wife was from Aberdeen. (Can't trck down their marriage certificate, most frustrating!)

From the 1861 census onwards, he was a greengrocer in Scarborough. I have 2 addresses for them - Salegrave Road and finally 56 Nelson Street.

Thank so much.  Smiley

Hi Emma,
Could you please add to your list Margaret Diana HASTINGS who died in Whitby Hospital on 2 June 1988 aged 69 but looked decades older?  She maybe in some local papers from time to time as she had become eccentric [ that's a mild statement]  and in Whitby, Filey, Scarborough was known as Miss H...  She sometimes slept rough even tho she owned property in Whitby...
She'd been thru RADA and could put on various voices... there may be articles about her in the Magistrate' Courts about rental properties.
Anything that bobbed up would be of interest and thank you.

Hi Emma
Are you looking at names of the present or are there sometimes references to times of old?

My great grandfather John Porteous, born 1815 in Lockerbie, was, at the 1881 census, living at the Black Bull Inn in Pickering, he and his second wife were employed as gatekeepers on the railway.

I don't know what happened to him from then on until his death in Scarborough, 25 Beaconsfield Street, 14 July 1895 at the age of 80 (although his death certificate says he was 78).  He died of senile decay and cystitis and is interred in a paupers grave in Manor Road Cemetery.

When or why he was in Scarborough I don't know.  Why a paupers grave I don't know, he had five children from his second marriage!  Seemingly he had no contact with the four children of his first marriage (with my great grandmother Jane Hall) after the marriage to his second wife Ann in 1851.

Perhaps you may have something on Beaconsfield Road or  the Manor Road Cemetery.

Many thanks

Hi Ceeoh,

I will keep a look out for your surname. I look through all the paper so both past and present. So far seen no mentions of the names people are looking for me, but one day maybe!

Kind Regards
