Following on from a previous thread about Hugh Wagstaff, Margaret Weir and their son John, I thought I would put a post up to see if anyone has managed to find information about Hugh's mother and father?
Browsing the net it seems that all who have researched the Ayrshire Wagstaff tree have come to a standstill here.
Can anyone shed further light on Joseph Wagstaff and Jean/Jane Brown?

Hi Louise,
Joseph and Jean were my Gr Gr Gr Grandparents (assuming my family history information is correct).
I don't know of anyone who has found the parents of Joseph Wagstaff or Jean Brown. There was a rumor circulating on another thread (posted a few years ago) that Joseph immigrated from England with a brother, but I have never heard anything beyond that. I haven't come across any men in the records who would be a good candidate for a brother of Joseph.
I recently started a Wagstaff surname yDNA project. If there is ever a good number of participants, we may some day be able to determine how Joseph was linked to Wagstaffs in England.
By the way, if you haven't tried out the Great Britain Surname Profiler, its pretty facinating. Enter any surname and you can pull up maps of distribution in 1881 vs. 1998, and various statistics:

Back to Jean Brown, there could be something in the records for her siblings or parents. There were lots of Browns in the area. Maybe somebody else has come across something...

Thanks to you both 
I've already tried the surname profiler, which does suggest Joseph came from England, but without knowing anything about his marriage or birth, I am still clueless. It's nice to know there are others in the same boat, and there's not some obvious clue that I'm missing!
Brown is a much more common name, and again looking at the surname profiler the highest concentration is in southern Scotland, northern England. I'm sure it will be easier to find something on the Brown side. I seem to remember having something in my notes about Jean being born in Loudoun, but I'll have to check that one.
It looks like we will have to wait and see if anyone else researching the Ayrshire Wagstaffs has any further information.

Just to add, there is a theory that Jean's parents are Susanna Lawrie and James Brown (married 12 Dec 1752, Kilmarnock, Ayr) but we've not been able to prove that.
