Help with Elizabeth DIGGORY
« on: Thursday 13 September 07 07:21 BST (UK) »

I seem to be running around in circles!!!
I have  Elizabeth Diggory b 1830 c
In the 1861 Staffordshire census she was born in Hanley staffordshire.
In the 1871 Staffordshire she was born Drayton Shropshire.
I know for a fact that I cannot  find her as Elizabeth Diggory born in Staffordshire, however there appears to be one born in Shropshire.at around that time.
Now the difficulty is she married John Cooper [possibly around 1865] it may have been a second marriage.as i have a birth certificate of their daughter Alice Cooper b 1868 Burslem Staffordshire.
As anyone any ideas how to end this nightmare!!

Hi Glenys

Have you looked at a map to find these two places, it might be that they are situated in the same area.  People often put different counties as birthplaces when they border each other.

You will find explanations for towns and parishes on www.genuki.org.uk

In the 1861 Staffordshire census she was born in Hanley staffordshire.
In the 1871 Staffordshire she was born Drayton Shropshire.

Markey Drayton, Shropshire lies very close to the Staffordshire boarder.

Can you post the full references/details for the census details that you have already found?

Thanks Smiley

I think that Elizabeth's surname is actually Greggory on the 1861 census image because I found this marriage..........

Dec 1862 Wolstanton
John Cooper - on same page - Elizabeth Gregory
Vol. 6b  p.126

James aged 2 days in 1861..........looks like his birth........

James Cooper Gregory
June 1861 Wolstanton
Vol. 6b p.128

Lloyd- The details on the birth certificate of Alice Cooper b 4 July 1867 address 32 Bag St, Burslem Staffordshire.
Father- John Cooper profession Potter-
Mother -Elizabeth Cooper  formerly Diggory

Cazay- Is correct in saying that its possible Elizabeth Greggory on the 1861 may be the same person but her name mistakenly printed,as Elizabeth was later married to John Cooper also their daughter Alice Cooper is on the census too I really dont know.
Frederikay-- As for the name Diggory I have no idea what nationality this name is the way my mind is at this point I wonder if it is a name at all!!!
Many thanks to all of you who have replied.

I think you need to purchase a couple of certificates

The birth certificate of either Mary Ann Gregory (1861 -age given as 4 b. Burslem Staffs) -or the birth certificate of Elizabeth gregory (age 3 in 1861)

The marriage cert of Elizabeth gregory/John Cooper should give you Elizabeth's fathers name and occupation.

I cannot find a marriage of Elizabeth Diggory to Mr Gregory

Possibly Elizabeth's parents (if she was a Diggory?)were Edward /mary but you need certificates to confirm
