I'm eagerly awaiting Tonight's episode which looks really interesting. I think John Hurt is disappointed to discover that he hasn't any aristocratic connections.

Jeez, he needs to get a sense of humour about it. He should feel lucky to have all those newspaper clippings and photographs, I'd love to have all that info about my ancestors! BTW why was that picture of his G-Grandma so familiar? Have I seen it on rootschat?

I was right, it was a good one. A bit more like real genealogy (at least in my experience)

The picture was exactly in the style of some pictures of Queen Victoria after she was widowed. Perhaps that is why it looked familiar.

It must be nice to have so much help in exploring family myths and being able to travel when and where you want to go to find out about them
Discovering half of what he did would take most people years
But I did enjoy tonights programme, you're right Kerryb it seemed more genealogical with less of the general padding

What a waste of time the first half an hour was as he went on a wild goose chase on a 'suspicion' that his grt-grandmother was the illegitimate child of an irish marquis which turned out to be incorrect and the story had got distorted over time.
I've spent hours, days, weeks, months, years (and money) researching family myths. Isn't that what it's all about?

I quite enjoyed tonight's programme actually although I was irritated by John's reaction. If you're the type of person easily disappointed then perhaps it is best to leave well alone! There's a lesson for all family historians here and that is not to hold dear family legends without absolute proof. Jayson

I'm not convinced that Mr Lord Browne wasn't related to the Earls of Altamont and Oranmore, OK maybe not the Marquess of Sligo, but no reason to suppose the Mariner who they couldn't get beyond was not a member of that family. I though it was sloppily done and unsystematic. You don't start with a rumour, you start with hard facts
It is a fact that Mr Browne consolidated his claim to the Browne family by his house building activities.. why bother doing something so arcane if he himself did not have a strong belief in his own set of family tales?
I spent nearly thirty years trying to prove/disprove a similar claim and only this year was the family legend proved to be entirely true after all. I doubt very much that a programme of this sort does more than scratch the surface over a period of a few weeks. If I were Mr Hurt, I wouldn't be giving up on his Irish ancestors just yet

Why was it so important for him to have noble Irish blood? Would he not have been satisfied with working-class Irish blood or something? It was a shame that the entire programme was sepnt looking at basically one branch, when I bet they could have found far more truthful and interesting stories in other branches. You should never do genealogy with the hope of finding "noble" blood or that one of your ancestors was famous for some reason - no matter who they are, they are your history and your people.
