I wonder if anyone could help me please. Our family myth has it that my grandfather was put on a ship bound for the USA as a cabin boy by his wicked stepmother. He was born in 1870 in Jersey, Channel Islands, UK. (In the UK census of 1881 his place of birth is recorded as 'State of Jersey, United States'. This is incorrect.) However, it is clear from various documentation that he was unsure of his date of birth. He was registered as Ralph George but later called himself Frederick Ralph and would have been travelling under the surname of either Abercrombie or Le Jeune - it's a long story! He was still in England in1885. My father told me that he jumped ship in the USA and worked there for several years. He had returned to England by1901 as he is recorded in the census of that year as Ralph Abercrombie. Any information would be very much appreciated. Rosa
