MI's North Newbald? - Completed thanks to JillRuss
« on: Friday 14 September 07 14:59 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I am looking for details of George Butler who died Jul/Sep 1902 aged 70 in the Beverley District & his wife (?) Sarah aged 83 died in Jan/Mar 1906 in the Sculcoates District.

They were living in North Newbald on the 1901 Census & I wondered if they were buried there.  I am presuming the death in Sculcoates is his wife, but not checked this out and cannot understand why she was in that district unless she was staying with one of her 9 children. Also, I have not confirmed that it is the correct George Butler but the age & district look right.

Many thanks for looking,

Gill

Sorry Gill - there are absolutely no Butlers in the North Newbald MIs, as published by EY FHS.

Hi Jill,

I must admit I am not surprised as I have done a bit more research into to family & they seemed to have had a rough time.

Many thanks for looking it up, greatly appreciated,

Gill

Hello
I am new to rootschat so apologies if it is bad form to post on old topics...
Jill, I am stuck on this same George and Sarah that you mention above.
Sounds like you have more information than me, is there any way you can help me?

Many thanks

Hi Julian,

Welcome to Rootschat, I am sure you will find everyone very helpful here.

How can I help you?  I do have a bit of information on George & Sarah Butler but still haven't proved that he is part of my family, never found a baptism for him.

No, I have backed into him (so to speak).
I have his wife as Sarah Johnson, married 1855 in Beverley.
It is their son John b.1869 in Newbald who I followed back to this pair.  On the census they list their place of birth as Newbald and North Newbald.  Yet I also found Aldbrough and Cottingham as possible places of birth.  All very confusing.  I would love to hear what you were saying about them having a tough time of it.

Many thanks

Hi Julian,

If he is the George Butler in my tree he would have been born at Newland, Cottingham which is what he had given for the 1841-1871 Census then on the 1881 & 1891 Census had Newbald as his place of birth.  I often wonder if they get confused about place of birth with where they live!!  North Newbald is often called just Newbald.  You've got me with the Aldborough one, not seen this one!  Where did you see this?

I have their son, John, baptised 15 December 1867, son of George & Sarah Butler, labourer taken from the Newbald PR's

I have a copy marriage certificate:
Marriage Certificate for George Butler (23) gave William Butler, labourer as his father & Joseph & Ann Johnson were the witnesses.  He was living at North Newbald & a servant, his wife Sarah Johnson (21)  was also a servant living at North Newbald

Is this any help?  If he is the correct John Butler, I have his siblings baptisms as well.

Hi Gill
We are definitely talking about the same people.  I had Newland from the 1871 census but wasn't sure where that was.  I see now it is near Cottingham.  I cannot find them on any earlier census though, you say you have them 41,51,61?.

LDS have several George Butlers of about the right date in Yorkshire, but the best match seemed to be "12 MAR 1831 Aldbrough Near Hull".  However the parents are listed as George and Maria, so going by your marriage certificate, Aldbrough can be ruled out.  Joseph and Ann Johnson would be good candidates for Sarah's parents perhaps?

1867 sounds reasonable for their son John.  His age jumps about on the various census but it is definitely the same person.  So we are definitely looking for a William Butler.  Thanks for that, you have been a great help.

George's son John had a daughter called Gladys.  I can just about remember sitting on her knee Smiley
