I think I have found the Devonshire connection!!!

Firstly
William Solomon (who at this point looks likeley to be Richard's father) is unmarried and working as a farm servant in 1851

however
1861 shows him married to Elizth and the eldest child is Susan age 11

I could not find a Susan Solomon born c. 1850

Then I found this!

1851
St Ewe Cornwall
Richard Devonshire head 49 Ag lab St Ewe
Mary wife 52 Werryau??
ELIZ daughter 25U Farm employ Gorran
Caroline daughter 15 Gorran
Emma daughter 10 Gorran
SUSAN daughter 1 St Ewe

HO107 1908 31 4

didn't think it very likely that Mary Devonshire age 52 would have a 1year old daughter -so possibly the daughter was the child of Eliz

then

Marriage
Sept qtr 1852
on same page
Elizabeth Devonshire
William Solomon
5c 197

so it looks very likely that Richard could be
Richard Devonshire Solomon mar qtr 1853 St Austell!!!!

HuhHuhHuhHuhHuh??

Hi,

Yes it does look unlikely that Mary would have a child at 52.  Also I can see the 1861 record that shows:

Cordelia Solomon     8 Mo
Elizth Solomon    34
Geo Solomon    4
Richd Solomon    8
Susan Solomon    11
William Solomon    29
Wm Jno Solomon    6

Richard with the mis-spelt name that we spotted before.  Richard is shown as birth

St Austle, Cornwall, England which could well be a mis-spelling of St Austell.  This would tie in to the later records in 1871 and thereafter and would explain why we cannot find Richard on the 1861 census - his name was mis-spelt and his mother was Elizabeth.

I think I need to sit down and think about all this as my head is hurting!

Thanks for your help!

Hi Suz,

Just been updating my tree and it helps to make sense of it all!

So Susan was born out of wedlock circa 1851 with Elizabeth and William then getting married in 1853.  Would you suspect Susan would be a Devonshire or a Solomon?

Oooh the controversy!

Cheers again for all your help.

I would expect Susan too be named Devonshire, but I can't find a suitable birth registration for her???

Maybe they never registered her???

Might be worth putting out a post for her baptism.

Hi Suz,

Thanks for all your help, really appreciate it!

Cheers,

P.S.  I think I shall have to put out an SOS/request for a baptism too.
