Hi Chris
I wondered if you could look for the name PAYNE in East Grinstead for me? If there are too many then I am especially keen to find information about Henry and Dinah/Diana PAYNE.

Many thanks for your help - it is much appreciated.

Best wishes

Hi there jaxblk

Sorry for the delay in answering your query, but we have been away for a few days in South Wales looking for the wife’s paternal ancestors and meeting descendants of same

1841 Census for East Grinstead, Folio 1 – 93;  Rocks.
PAYNE Henry, 45, Shoemaker, born in Sussex
              Dinah, 50, born Sussex
              Richard, 14, Sussex
              Joseph, 12, Sussex
              Charles, 9, Sussex

Don’t forget their ages were rounded down to the nearest ‘5’ except children.

Incidentally there are some 30 odd families named Payne in East Grinstead in 1841, and in particular Church lane which had 6 houses, four of which were occupied by Paynes.

Hi Chris
many thanks for that information, I appreciate your help. I knew there were masses of PAYNEs in East Grinstead. Other researchers have suggested that there are 2 main families, who do not appear to be connected to each other. My branch are mainly shoemakers.

Best wishes

Hi Chris
You are a star!
If you wouldn't mind looking the PAYNE shoemakers up on the  1851 I would be grateful - but it is not urgent, so take your time.

Best wishes

My g-grandmother was Emma Payne from East Grinstead, her father was Thomas Payne b1821 Horne, and I think his father was Thomas Payne b1797 West Hoathley. I think my line comes from Horne, Worth and West Hoathley before East Grinstead. The Paynes from East Grinstead are a minefield, there seesm to be several unrelated families there. I have odds and sods of E-G Payne notes if anyone interested.
