Chanmey's of Aghold Parish
« on: Sunday 16 September 07 13:14 UTC (UK) »

Richard Chamney came to Canada on 1822 and, I believe, was married to Euphemia Mason.
Any word, dates, info, contact would be greatly appreciated.

Unusual surname and shouldn't be too difficult to trace.  You write that Richard arrived in Canada c. 1822 and married 18??.   If his daughter Jane married in 1878 age 20 - she must have been born around 1858, ie thirty-six years after Richard left Ireland.
This may indicate that he was a young boy when leaving Ireland.
How do you know that Richard belonged to Aghold Parish?   That may provide a clue.

Hello LH,
I have searched my notes and photos and Aghold Parish is written on the back of a photo of Richard.
I was a little off on dates as the passage below indicates that Richard arrived in Canada in 1826 - not 1822.
The following passage was written in a small booklet commemorating our pioneer fathers of East Wawanosh Township of Canada's 100th Centennial.

"Richard Chamney was born in Wicklow County, Ireland, on March 3, 1826.
There as a young man, he became a tanner by trade.
Like many others in those days he said goodbye to the ‘Old Sod’ and arrived in Kingston, Ontario in 1849, where  as a skilled tanner he found plenty of work.
The following year he came to East Wawanosh seeking land and purchased Lot 29, Concession 9 on May 29,1850, paying cash for the property.
He returned to Kingston where he spent the next 2 years earning sufficient money to start work on his homestead.
He was married in Goderich on May 29, 1853 to Euphemia Mason. Together they built their first log home in the wilderness, situated to the east of the present farm residence. They raised a large family of 4 daughters and seven sons, William 1854, John 1855, Edward 1857, Jane 1858, Ellen 1860, Richard 1864, Euphemia 1866, Joseph 1868, Sara Ann 1870, Henry 1872 and David 1874."

Richard Chamney is my gr.gr.grandfather on my paternal side of the family.

I appreciate your efforts to help me find more info of Richards' life in Ireland and any family still there.
Warm regards,
Sharron

Hi

Am I reading this wrong?   Richard was born 1826 and trained as a Tanner in Ireland before arriving in Kingston in 1848, according to the small booklet you have.  If that is so, he cannot have left Ireland in 1826 ... but maybe 18 or so years later!  Am I right?

Hi LH,
That is correct ... he was born in Ireland in 1826, arrived in Canada in 1849 (he'd have been approx. 23 yrs old), married in 1853.
Sorry about the misleading info ... I am researching several sides of my family ... getting all my dates inter-mingled. Thank goodness I quoted the rest right from the book.

Hi

Depending on which religion Richard was - have you searched through the old Aghold Parish registers.  Since you mention this Parish, I assume Richard was Church of Ireland.  If his birth is registered, it is likely that his parents will be named on the same record.
You may also see later entries, perhaps naming Richard as a Godparent or even a Marriage Witness for a relative.
Cheers

'Parish' may refer to the civil Parish not a Church of Ireland Parish. What religion was the family in Canada?
Sharron- have you traced Richard Chamney is Canadian census records? Might also be more clues in gravestone inscriptions, local newspaper obituaries, vital records (do you have Richard's marriage and death certificates?), etc.

This is exciting ... and I'm very pleased to meet you.
I hope you can provide a little information about Richard Chamney and the family he left behind in Ireland.
Would you happen to know where the Chamney's originated ?
I can help on this end somewhat in informing you of what I know after Richard came to Canada. I am directly related to him through his daughter Jane, who married Henry Deacon, whose family was also from Ireland.

Emily margaret chamney married William Henry Sheane. Emily b 1887 d 27 Aug 1966. buried in rathnew cemetery wicklow. they were married abt 1915, dont know where maybe wicklow or Shilellagh/Aghold.
my other Chamney is Jane Elizabeth b 1902 d 19 Apr 1992 in Shilellagh. she married my grt uncle George Reginald Tyner. my late cousin's wife has a framed picture detailing the earliest chamney he was related to back to 1700's i think.
they married abt 1924/5.
3rd chamney woman: Annie b 1889(most likely to be sister of emily margaret) married Archibald"Archie" Sheane(brother of william Henry Sheane. Annie d 17 Nov 1958 in Glenealy Wicklow married before 1919 i think.
any links with these women, i will gladly share their descendants.

I'm sorry, I'm not very good at this ... the photo is only abt. 5"x7", didn't think it would show so large.
If you or Chamney have similar photos or could find out who Richard's parents/grandparents were, or siblings, I would be very excited and grateful.
