Hi,
I am looking for an Amos Fowler, born in Harlington in 1844 on the 1861 census.
In 1851 he is liviing at home in Harlington - By 1871 He is in Prison.
Where could he be in 1861?
Jim

Hi, Thanks Rosie, thats certainly him.
So if he got sentanced to 18 months in October 1859, then he may have still been in Prison in the 1861 Census?
Can anybody see him?
Jim

Hi
The information states that he was aka James Fowler and that he had gone to Parkhurst Prison if that is any help to anyone who can search census details.
Rosie

Parkhurst prisoners are only identified by initials, but there's no-one incarcerated born Bedfordshire
Amos came between James and Nathaniel in 1851, so he's not the James that Jane found

Like you say David, Amos came between James and Nathaniel, so would have been about 16-17.
Its an odd one, I have been researching the fowler family now for a couple of years, but this census has really got me stuck.
There was one record somebody found when I asked before (a few yeasr back) - an Amos Fowler aged 17 staying in Castleford I think, although it also said he was born there.
Can you see this one? What do you think?
Jim

Hi Jim Have you seen his gaol record for 1868? Same link you already have. He certainly was a naughty boy and stiff sentences did nothing to deter him. You can order his photograph, how exciting Jan

Hi,
Wow! That looks like it's going to be him! Obviously meaning Harlington rather than Arlington!
Can anybody elaborate on what it measn by unknown prison?
I presume the Wootton name is just coincidence (the same as Bedfordshire Village!)

I've tried to establish the name of the prison but without luck. Wootton is near Newport, Isle of Wight and thus near Parkhurst Prison. There was another prison in this area called Albany but according to http://www.institutions.org.uk/prisons/England/HAM/hampshire_prisons.htm it wasn't built till 1867. So it is a bit of puzzle.
Jan
George Hall Governor of this unknown prison was Governor of Parkhurst in 1851

Hi Jim It must be Parkhurst as according to this site
http://members.aol.com/Jillchmbrs/homepages.html
George Hall was governor there from 1843 to 1864 when it closed as a boy's prison. The page with the name of prison on it must have come adrift from the other images
Jan ( relieved to have solved a mystery)
