Does anyone know any more information about this other then that it was built around 1789 and the building was once owned by the archbishop of canterbury. I know the pub still exists there, but just wondering if anyone knows of previous landlords or owners of the property. It has been suggested that some ancestors owned this property after 1903 (unsure the exact year) and I am trying to find some verification of this.
Thank you Gary

Starting suggestions:
Landlords MAY show in trade directories,
They would have had to have held a liquor licence..
They should have been eligible to vote.
If you add your general location to your profile, then we could indicate where to locate these data sources.

Thanks Annie, I will be writing to the landlords unless I am very lucky and someone is visiting the pub this weekend, lol and can source out the information for me. Or alternatively are visiting the records office, who advised me that they have some records of landlords or licensees, but I have to view them myself, which sadly won't be able to do for a few months yet.
Shame you can't remember, lol.
Thank you anyway. Regards Gary

Oh I thought I had added the names on here. They were William John Bean & Mary Ann Bean (maiden name Goodwin).
LOL I can understand enjoying your drink more then anything else. Will need a good visit to the pub if I ever manage to put these family stories to rest!! Another family member is claiming they ran a pub in bucks, whilst another one is claiming they ran this one, just trying to put a slight feud to rest.
Regards Gary

Hello, I've got a book on St Ives Pub which i bought from their 'Norris Museum'. "The Pubs of St Ives" by Bob Burn-Murdoch (ISBN0952590026).
Anyway, it says that amongst other things, it was once two pubs - The Swan and nextdoor - The Angel.
In 1789 it was purchased by the Archbishop of Canterbury (Thomas Tenison). By this time, The Swan had become The Three Swans and The Angel had become.. The White Swan (confusing!).
By 1795, The Three Swans had become The Robin Hood and by 1806, the eastern side of the pub (The White Swan/The Angel) had started being used by other businesses. In the 1850s.. until the 1920s, this side was a hairdresser's.. afterwhich, the building was altered and the present building took over the whole site.

Thank you for that Andrew. So I could be looking for the owners under a completely different pub name then, that helps me to know that. Thank you.
