Hi Debz

I have been looking for Jane Griffiths on the 1841 and on IGI ...ummm hard one ....I think ordering the marriage cert of Thomas COOKE and Jane GRIFFITHS will at least give us the father's names and hopefully some helpful witnesses ...maybe siblings ....keeping fingers crossed.  Grin

I have been through the census again ...
Jane states born Chatham, Kent for 1851/61/71, in 1881 she states Forepeck, Kent as POB ....

In 1841, Thomas COOKE (a mariner) was married to Susannah (d; mar q 1842) and living in Barnstaple. I wonder if Jane Griffiths was in Devon at that time ...?  Undecided wish we had a 1847 census LOL   Cool

will keep looking

Hi Debs .... i think Jane was Born in Chatham because there was a barracks there and she may have met Thomas there...he could have been posted there.
I can't find her in 1841 either.
i have ordered 3 certs. James BC and DC and marriage cert for Thomas and Jane.

Forepeck ?? i went on OLD maps and it's not listed at all. I've looked for births on Family search and nought there neither Wink

I will let you know as soon as the certs drop thru the letter box..
Take care

Hi

I am sure the name Giles Griffith ...is going to feature somewhere in the parents of Jane ....Thomas and Jane had children named with normal names for years ...then all of a sudden ...they name the sixth child GILES GRIFFITH  Roll Eyes
They hadn't even given the other children (before or after Giles), a middle name !! Undecided)

okay ...yes I am impatient to know ...will wait for the certs  Grin Cool

Hello Deb,
you are absolutely right- my opinion too.
i can't remember but i think i tried a Giles Griffith for 41 census .
it is strange how they have not given the earlier children middle names. Was it a tradition to give the youngest child the maiden name?
in the same tree there is a Sarah Frost webber - have not found a Frost!
so appreciate your participation.

Hiya debzzz

Giles griffiths Cook(e) ...had 2 siblings after he was born , fanny and john ...have just rechecked the births and none of other children got the middle name ...seems rather strange .....his is such a unique name in amongst the common ones of his brothers and sisters . Roll Eyes

i even checked to see if a Giles Griffiths had died around that time ... I was thinking thatmaybe they had named him after a grandfather.

i see there is also another Giles Griffiths Cook ( no E)  born 1898, Plymouth Devon

That's interesting about the Giles G Cook in 1898. James cook and family all lived in Plymouth . Maybe it's Giles's own son ?  GGC would have been 38.
i'll have time and peace tomorrow to research.
i had the same thought about the baby being born when grandfather died.

Morning Deb,

have just checked on the 1898 GGCook and he was the original G G Cooke's son . It seems they must have moved to Plymouth also and lived a few streets from James Cook and Hannah.

catch you later Wink

I can't wait either , i have typed up quite a little "history book" for my godson now....I've explained places and occupations and put in service medal cards and pictures. There are about 23 pages now .

Daniel is 16 and wants to become a historian. His father died about 6 years ago and i thought it would help in feel more settled in the knowledge of his heritage as the family knew nothing beyond Daniels great grand mother.

I'm looking forward to giving it to them.

Hi Deb....
james Cooke born 6th july Carhampton1851 ...mother Jane Cooke formerly Griffiths !!  Smiley  father Thomas Cooke
~~~~~~~~-------------------------------------------------
marriage.. thomas Cook of  full age . Batchelor (? ... had he been married to Susannah before would it say Batchelor Huh)
Living in Billbrook ..married at the Parish church of Old Cleeve ( i've been on holiday there !)
Father THOMAS COOK - GROOM
Father of Jane - William Griffith- labourer  Huh
Debz
~~~~~~~~---------------------------------------------

Death cert ...not sure about this . To understand the time line on James you'll need to to see my MARRIAGE post in Devon some weeks back.

It all fits except it says that he was a builders labourer. James had been a private in the Royal Marines. Unless he was discharged after 20 years of service and changed jobs. Anyway he was killed in an accident involving dynamite .

HI Debz

I have looked around in Devon for Thomas Cook, groom. Thomas who married Jane was born Barnstaple ... so I figured his dad would be there too  Undecided

Jane's dad, William is also a hard one to find ... Where is Cleve and Billbrook?

Also who were the witnesses to their marriage...any family members? And where the heck did the name GILES come from ??
