I am trying to find out some more information about this woman, so I was wondering if anyone else has researched the family.
Esther was born in Tadmorton in 1842. She then during her life went on to have four children with no sign of a husband. She moved to Leamington Spa in the year of the birth of her first child, I assume to get away from her home county and all the associated gossip. She has worked in various inns in leamington and as a launderess. She does not appear to have been in receipt of poor relief and seems to have kept the family together, apart from on one census the two girls appear to have been fostered out.
Esther eventually died on 16th October 1899 in Rushmore Street, Leamington Spa.
The daughter of one of Esther's sons, still speaks in hushed tones about her father being born on the worng side of the sheets, however she cannot recall her father's two sisters and seemed surpirsed to learn about them.
I am fascinated about this woman and would love to learn more about her and how she managed to raise four children with out a marriage to her name.
All other sources have come up blank on her.
Thanks in anticipation
Debbie

Hi Debbie,
Do you have the birth certs for the four children? If so are there any clues as to who the father/s might have been? On 1881 census she is down as "widowed"! Can you find her on 1851 census? Would her family have had money to help her live once she moved away?

Hi both
If Esther did have a another daughter in 1862, then she must have gone back to Tadmorton to have the child. She had had a daugter in 1860 in Leamington and her subsequent children were born there as well. I will investigate this, stands a chance she may have moved back home to have the child, especially as she already had a two year old in tow! Thrirza ia an unsual name, but there is no one of that name in her family or indeed the name Ellen.
She has put herself down as widow in one census and I think that may have been a bluff. Her son's birth certificate (my 2x grandfather) is empty on the fathers entry, on his marraige certificate though he gives his father as James Bodfish, Deceased. I know that this is not right as my grt aunt says that he was ashamed of his bastard status, so I think that was a cover up as well.
Daniel and Hannah her parents were not of means, so that and the fact that she always seemed to be employed points to the fact that she was not getting any money from her family. I am wondering what attracted her to Leamington though, as there does no appear to be any other relis around to help her.
She is with her family in Tadmorton in 1851 at the age of 8 and dad's occupation is as a Ag Lab, she then appears at the next Census in Leamington.
There is a family story that one of the Bodfishes was a prostitue and I am wondering if it was her, bearing in mind that some of her working life was spent in public houses. This could explain how she managed to keep out of the workhouse and support 4 children. There is no doubt that there was no husband around, however I think I will send for the birth certs on the other 3 just to see what nasty surprises there are!

My curiosity has gotten the better of me after reading these entries re Esther Bodfish.
My mother was a Bodfish and I am doing my family Tree. Since Bodfish is known as a Singular Surname ( meaning all Bodfish's are related) I would appreciate any information re Esther and any other Bodfish's that you know of or are connected with.
Thank you ever so much to whomever can help me and or reply.

1881 census RG11 1525 folio 63 Tadmarton, Oxfordshire Thurza E. Bodfish 19 General Servant Tadmarton, Oxfordshire
Births Jun 1862 BODFISH Thirza Ellen Banbury 3a 640
but on the 1871 census
1871 RG10 14?2 folio 53 Tadmarton Oxfordshire Daniel Bodfish 50 Head Married Brewer and ag lab Hannah Bodfish 49 Wife Married George Bodfish 16 Son Ruth E Bodfish 12 Daughter Emma J? Bodfish 10 Daughter Thersa E Bodfish 9 Daughter Alice M Bodfish 8 Daughter Kate Bodfish 4 Daughter all born Tadmarton except Hannah born Darlingcott? Worcestershire
so perhaps Daniel and Hannah took this daughter into their own family and brought her up?

ShirlGirl
welcome to Rootschat.
Bodfish/Botfish is a surname registered with the Guild of One Name Studies so someone has already begun research on the surname. She is a long standing member so could have built up a great deal of information over time.

Just wanted to further note that this marriage below.............. 13 Oct 1791 William Bodfish to Hannah Grantham at Tadmartan. This couple are my GGGG Grandparents. Smiles. My mother was a Bodfish so I am a direct decendent of this Bodfish Family. Smiles.
Would love any other Bodfish information that you may come across. Thanks Shirl

Hi I,m new to this site but I've been looking into the Bodfish family for a year or so. My 3xgreat grandfather was Reuben Bodfish who was one of Esther's brothers. I've managed to trace 11 children in all, including Esther & Reuben. If anyone else knows of any more, or has any information about Reuben, I'd be really grateful. Paul.
