1891 census - Michael Mulhearan - COMPLETED WITH MANY THANKS TO GILL
« on: Wednesday 19 September 07 20:26 BST (UK) »

Looking for Michael 'Mulhearan' on 1891 census.  On 1861 surname spelt Malean, 1871 - Mulherin, 1881 - Mulheran.  I'm spoilt for choice!!  His birth was registered in Scarborough in September quarter 1850 (as Mullharen) but on above three censuses he is 11, 20 and 27 respectively.  On 1881 he is living at home at Palfremans Yard, St Helen on the Walls.  I realise this is quite a task because of the different spellings  Huh Huh Huh but hopefully the fact that he was born in Scarborough (stated on all three censuses) may help.

With very many thanks.

There is a marriage on FreeBMD :

MULHARN    Michael         York    9d   112
McGlone    Bridget          York      9d     112

On the 1891 Census at 13 Barker Hill Court, York is
Michael Mulhern    38  Bricklayers Labourer
Bridget Mulhern      33

Also there are some Irish born people on the same page.

Hello Gill

Thank you very much for your help.  I will send for Michael's marriage certificate as well as his sister Jane's which will hopefully confirm that these are 'my folk'.

Did the census details by any chance give place where Bridget was born?  Was she by any chance born in York or was it Ireland?  Hope you can help.

With very many thanks.

Hi Zephy,

Sorry for not saying, they were all given as being born at York.

There was a birth on FreeBMD
Births Mar 1858
McGoughn    Bridget         York    9d   9

I presume this must be her, the year is correct & the only one I can see that is anything like it.

Hi Gill

Thank you for that find.  I did a search for her birth but never saw the McGoughn one.  I think I have found her on 1881 census with her family under the surname McGlown!  Presuming this is her family, I also searched freebmd for the births of her siblings and found them under McGloyne and McGlone and I think I have also found the marriage of her parents, Michael McGlowan and Bridget O'Harra (which I presume will be O'Hara) in 1853.  It's nearly as bad as my Mulhearan/Mulheran/Mulherin/Mulhern!!

Thank you again for your help.

With best wishes.
