Hi there,

Could the road possibly be Lymburn Road?  According to modern maps, it isn't that far from Maryhill.  I can't answer your question regarding an institution being in the road at that time, sorry.

is it far from bearsden as my grANDmothers death cert says she was living  in milngavie and buried in bearsden but saying that my grandfather was living in maryhill it gets more confusing by the day

Hi Kimchris,

Bearsden is actually closer to Maryhill than Milngavie, according to this map link:

http://www.multimap.com/maps/?title=Bearsden%20Map&t=l&map=55.916668,-4.35

By the way do you know the common Glaswegian way to pronounce Milngavie is actually Milguy?

I used to live in Milngavie, in Montrose Gardens, in the early 1950's, and I was always proud of the fact that I knew how to pronounce the place as "Milguy", especially when I moved to England and got into conversation with Scots people here.
Sorry, no help at all with this query, just couldn't resist a bit of nostalgia...!

Bearsden then Milngavie & then on to Maryhill. They all sort of flow into each other.
As to somebody living in Bearsden & being Milngavie or vice-versa not that surprising.
Take into account religion-certain religions would traditionally be buried in certain cemeteries.
Family lairs- maybe money was a problem so placed in an ex sisting lair that belonged to the family.
As to Lymburn Road-maybe the home of another rellie who took care of her.If it were a hospital I would expect it to be named.Lots of Nursing Homes,Care Homes in Milngavie.

Can I jump in like Keith did with a bit of personal nostalgia - I lived in Milngavie in the early 1990's, up near Douglas Academy.

I remember the remains of George Bennie's 1930's monorail project http://dewi.ca/trains/bennie/index.html.

It was a good place to live - only a few miles from Glasgow city centre, yet away from the bustle,  and only 20 minutes' drive to Loch Lomond.

Shaun J,
Yes, we're probably a couple of interlopers on this particular thread, but thanks so much for that excellent Milngavie website.  Think I might post on its message board - have strong memories of our house in Montrose Gardens with its back garden running down to Tannoch (was it?) Loch, which used to freeze over in the winter; I used to stand on my father's foot with my arms and body tight around his leg as he skated across the ice.   I also remember an Alsatian dog falling under the too-thin ice and disappearing without trace until its body was found in the thaw next springtime.   This was about 1951, and I was about 4 years old...
