John Shanks b1842 and Jane Muir b1848 at Whithorn were married in 1866 at Whithorn.
they had the following children, all born at Whithorn:
Agnes 1867
Sarah 1868
Andrew Muir 1871
Thomas 1871
Elizabeth Muir 1873
Janet Galloway 1878
John or Arthur Archibald 1879
It appears that John abandoned his family and emigrated to Australia where he re-married in 1895, claiming to be a widower. This is strange as I believe that Jane Muir may have lived until 1935!!!!!
I am trying to find out more about what happened to the children in this family and would be grateful for any assistance with this. If anyone has access to the census data for 1881, 1891 and 1901 I would be interested to see the details.
Several of John's siblings moved to the Govan, Lanarkshire area so I'm not sure whether John's family stayed in the Whithorn area or if they too moved to Lanarkshire.

Thank you very much for all of this - it is all very useful to me. Just a couple of queries:
Could the 1891 census be for the McBryde family? I have a note that Sarah married a William McBryde not McBoyde.
I think you have found Agnes in 1881. Her maternal grandparents were Archibald Muir and Agnes Scott. Do you have the full list of people in that household?

Thank you for this info - it is all very interesting to me.
I don't now at this stage who Georgina Galloway,
Andrew Muir and Janet Muir are in 1891. Presumably Andrew is the brother of Archibald Muir (father of Jane Muir b1848)?
Also, I don't know anything about the Grt Grand Nieces that you have found in 1901:
Janet Vera Shanks - 4 - Grt Grand Niece
Jeame Shanks - 7 - Grt Grand Niece
Nancy R Shanks - 30 - Grand Niece
Hopfully someone will know who these people are so that I can tie them into my tree.
