Thanks very much for all of this info.

Things are starting to fit together quite nicely.

I have Andrew Muir Shanks and Thomas Shanks both born 03 Jan 1871 at Whithorn.  As Thomas does not seem to appear in the 1871 then I guess he either died in infancy or never existed at all.

I'm still not sure quite how the 'sister-in-law' Georgina Galloway fits in.  Does anyone know how the Galloway family connects into all of this?

Also, how the 87 yr old head of household in 1901, Janet Muir, fits in is a mystery to me.  Any contributions here would be very welcome!!!

Georgina Galloway - I found her in domestic service as a cook 1851, 1861, 1871. Do you want details of who she worked for?

However, it's hard to say who she is. The obvious conclusion would be that she is Janet Muir's sister Huh One of the children was called Janet Galloway Shanks so Galloway might be a family name.

Unfortunately the records I'm looking at don't give marital status. Hard to know if Galloway is Georgina's maiden name or a married name. You'd have to go to SP to see the originals for a cost.

She was living with Andrew and Janet in 1881. Same household.

Have checked on the SP website and Georgina Galloway was unmarried in the census record.  I thought that I had found her christening in the IGI in 1831, the daughter of Alexander Galloway and Rachel Dawson.  However, that couple do not appear to have had a child named Janet........................the mystery continues.

The other question that arises is how does Janet's husband, Andrew Muir, connect to the Archibald Muir that appears in the 1881 census along with Agnes and Elizabeth Shanks?  Perhaps they were brothers but again I have not found a link.

All suggestions welcome!
