Im looking for the birth or family of,  or connections to, a William ORD  According to censuses  he was born c1880 Stockton,  and on his marriage to Jane HILL in Hartlepool 1905.
He was then a florist which ties up with 1901 census where he was a flower hawker in Hartlepool.
1891 census - William (age 10) is apparently with parents George & Martha Ann in Monkwearmouth, with sister Jane Ann age 2.
1901 census also gives George & Martha still in Monkwearmouth with rest of family.

1905 Marriage cert states fathers name as George. 
But Cannot find family in 1881 census!

The birth indexes are also coming up negative in tracing him and proving his parents names.  1880 and other births do not match up,
1880  1Q Middlesborough Reg Dist birth in Ormesby, but father is William and mother Mary Ann.
1880 3Q Easington birth - parents names John & Jane.
Only one in 1883 gives his father as George, but mothers name is Isabella.
1882 Durham - parents Thomas & Sarah.

While census and marriage cert state William was born Stockton, the registration districts and place names are confusing to try and work out his birth!!
Could the family be missing from the 1881 census?

Why do the birth indexes not match up - is he also missing from those as well?!

Any help appreciated !!   Either from ORD researchers or anyone familiar with reg districts and place names!!
I live in Portsmouth so cannot visit that far north!!!

I had a quick look at the Census entries you mentioned for George and Martha.  The first thing that struck me was that Martha would have only been aged 14 when William was born.

Does William belong to George or Martha?  If he is the son of Martha before marriage he will be registered with her surname.

Working with daughter Jane Ann's birthyear and birthplace I found this in the Sunderland Online Marriage Registers.

1888 George ORD and Martha A MCINNES

This doesn't help with William's birth registration!  I'll look through the birth indexes later today.

It could be that William has been adopted by George and Martha, therefore you might not be able to find out what his original surname was Sad

Another possibility is that he was the illegitimate child of George, (who also came from Stockton) and was registered under his mother's name.
The Registration Act of 1875 stated:
"The putative father of an illegitimate child cannot be required as father to give information respecting the birth. The name, surname and occupation of the putative father of an illegitimate child must not be entered except at the joint request of the father and mother; in which case both the father and mother must sign the entry as informants"

Therefore a man could only be named as the father of an illegitimate child on the birth certificate if he consented and was also present when the birth was registered.

Not much further forward I'm afraid!

Stockton Indexes are online, but there is no birth entry for William ORD.  There is an entry for a George, born 1859.

I've searched the GRO Indexes for William's birth - some of these you have already ruled out.

3Q 1879 William Edward Lanchester
2Q 1880 William Middlesbro
3Q 1880 William Guisbro
3Q 1880 William Chester le Street
3Q 1880 William Easington
1Q 1881 William Gateshead

If you apply to the Local Register Office and state that father's name must be George and that doesn't match you will get your cheque back in full.

I've not yet found George ORD in 1881, but Chester le Street and Gateshead Registration Districts are both possibilities for a move from Stockton to Monkwearmouth.
 
It may be worth getting George's marriage certificate which should show if he had been married before Martha.

The birth of Martha Ann McInnis was registered in Sunderland 1Q 1867.

I'm off to look at the Census again - these people have to be somewhere!!

I lost track of where I had posted this query and have just found it again from my email inbox!
